On and off, the balance faltered when Lemmon overacted, as if threatened by Matthau's smarts. Besides 'The Odd Couple', they did handsomely in 'The Fortune Cookie', but soured in 'The Front Page' and as grumpy men were let down by unoriginal scripts.

They were good together but nothing to get weepy over.

They were so great together in the Grumpy Old Men and The Odd Couple movies and The Front Page, and many more. Their comic timing was impeccable and their opposite personalities and styles complimented each other.
