Monty Python's Flying Circus 4

Life of Brian is one of the best dark comedies written - next to Dr. Strangelove.

Monty Python's Flying Circus 4

They are the second best (tied with the Marx Bros.) only to the Three Stooges which should top the list.

Monty Python's Flying Circus 4

As close as humanly possible to contemporary Marx Brothers humor. As good and as perceptive of social stupidity as the SNL gang would become, Python was even more outlandish - and on target.

Monty Python's Flying Circus 5

What I loved about Python was their ability to combine the most erudite, sophisticated (not to mention topical) humor with elements of the most juvenile slapstick imaginable and do it so seamlessly and successfully. I saw them live onstage in NY in the late 70's, and they were just as funny in person as they were on the TV. I still wish they were all alive and still performing together. Humor like this is sorely missed in the era of Adam Sandler and Saturday Night Live (that show has been dead a long, long time and doesn't know it yet).

Monty Python's Flying Circus 5

I think I grew up at a pretty good time. When I was younger, Sunday afternoons were filled with old John Wayne westerns and classic comedies from the likes of Laurel and Hardy and Abbott and Costello. But on Sunday nights, thanks to pure luck for someone at the PBS station out of Dallas, there was Monty Python. The Python troops humor was a bit like the Three Stooges on drugs (I mean that in a good way). Where the Stooges could take something as simple as sitting down for dinner and turn it into a long comedy scene, Python could take something as mundane as someone's show size and make a running gag out of it. At times bizarre, at times pushing the envelope when it comes to taste, you can draw a heavy line between some of today's odd humor and Python. And now for something completely different.

Monty Python's Flying Circus 5

IMO - there has never been a group of goofballs more hilarious than this. They are totally insane and completely hysterical. The Flying Circus is one of only two television shows ever made that I would ever consider actually buying.

The British bent of some of the humor went over our heads, but overall it was brilliant.

Monty Python's Flying Circus 5

Brilliant. Hard to measure because they are so different than anyone on this list. Sharp, nasty, witty, incisive and hilarious.
