This comedy has enough nooks and crannies to make it a cult classic. Cult films have to repay viewers' ability to recall the odd and offbeat, and there's so much unforgettable bizarro stuff here, whether it's art in a flying harness or an inexplicable dance cycle or Nagelbrett or Walter Sobchak's unintentionally hilarious pronouncements: "Say what you like about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it's an ethos."

Another great Coen Brothers product. The Dude abides! Mistaken identity is underpinning of this funny flick. Jeff Bridges plays a totally worthless Jeff Lebowski. It seems that there is anouther Jeff Lebowski around, who has a wife who owes some gangsters money. The flick starts when two enforcers show up to collect the money, but discover that Bridges is the wrong Lebowski. On the way out the enforcers urinate on his rug. Goaded on by his pal, John Goodman, Bridges goes to see the other Jeff Lebowski, the big Lebowski, to get compensation for the rug. It goes on from there with a kidnapping plot, double crosses and more. It gets better with age!

Gotta love how they put the friend's ashes in the coffee can.

Brilliant and hilarious from start to finish, one of my favorites from the late 90's. I love it when the cab driver kicks him out for ragging on The Eagles!

'The Big Lebowski' contains some of the most memorable and quotable dialogue in film history. Most love it, but to those who hate it, well this agression will not stand. I've never met someone who "got" this film after just one viewing (myself included) as only repeat viewings open one's eyes to the intricacies and nuances of the characters, the situation, and how they all interact. There a lot of ins...a lot of outs. While Bridges' brilliant rendition of a dead-beat stoner might rub some the wrong way, most viewers will look past his transgressions and realize that he's the man for his time and place...and all he really wanted was his rug back. Smart, quirky, hilarious...the highest of recommendations. And if you don't like it, well, then that's just, like, your opinion, man...

Damn funny. . .John Goodman's burnout-Vietnam vet character reminded me of my old man's loser friends. . .absolutely hilarious film if you give it the chance. ..

I read a comment that said the movie gets better each time you watch it. Ditto, the first viewing was damn good and its one of the best openings Ive seen with the Dude testing the half and half in the store, paying with a check and then accelerating into the scene in his apartment with classic lines like let me take another look and obviously youre not a golfer. Walter is a powder keg of excitement and Donnie is a perfect support character. AND Jesus! Good ride thats worth watching over and over and over.

One of the best "offbeat" films I've seen-it gets even funnier with repeat viewings, since there's a lot of subtle stuff going on.Everyone in the cast turns in a stellar performance-especially John Goodman. The main charachter,"The Dude",is always cool and unruffled even in the worst of situations. His buddy, played masterfully by John Goodman is almost the opposite-taking Bowling VERY seriously. This cult classic is full of great scenes and lines that will keep you laughing long after the credits have rolled by.

I loved this movie. Jeff Bridges plays a great slacker, and Steve Buscemi is always a plus. John Goodman was great, and I liked the voice over by Sam Elliot, giving a western feel to a movie that was far from a western.
