I think that this one should be rather easy. I don't know about anybody else, but I think it's totally the right thing to do to give your seat up to one of these people that are listed. And if a person wants to be nice, they can give their seat up for another person, anyway.

That angers me. There are so many less fortunate people than you. We should start by doing little things - give up your seat, make somebody's day a better place to be.

This comment is vry helpful, since I'm a pregnant woman and that happens to me sometimes. They think pregnant women are somewhat overweight.

Giving up one's seat to an elderly or pregnant woman is the right thing to do for two reasons. First, because it is decent and respectful and second, you never know when you're going to meet up with someone like my great-grandmother. Back in the ninteen "teens" when men wore straw hats and women carried umbrellas (parasols) my great-grandmother, a recent Italian immigrant to New York City, was riding the subway on her way to work. A very pregnant woman got on the train at one of the stops. It was afternoon rush hour and the car was crowded. Sitting next to great-grandma was a man reading a newspaper. In her broken English she told the man to give his seat to the pregnant woman. The man looked up and after seeing the pregnant woman said to my great-grandmother that he would not give up his seat to a Jew. In those days the subway cars were not air conditioned and the windows were capable of opening. When my great-grandmother got off the train at her stop she walked out of the car and made her way to the closest open window near the man, stuck her torso in the car, and began beating the man over the head with her umbrella as she told him in Italian what a rotten scoundrel he was to not give his seat to a pregnant woman regardless of whether she was Jewish or not. She destroyed the man's straw hat, put a few choice bumps on his head, and as the train began moving she stood there on the platform, pointing her umbrella at the moving car and saying in Italian that if she ever met up with him again she would beat him into eternal damnation with her parasol. I suppose that in these "enlightened" times she would be arrested for assault and battery but I'll bet you that from that day forward the guy gave up his seat to pregnant women for fear that great-grandma might be hiding somewhere in the car with umbrella in hand, just waiting for the chance to destroy another straw hat and send him off to meet his maker.

I once had an elderly woman scream at me for not moving over a seat in front of the bus. She expected me to move, but did not ask me. I personally needed that seat to see where the bus was going because i did not know where to get off in that area. If she asked me to move, i would of. She wasn't very polite.

I'm aware this form of courtesy has been lost mostly, but as long as some people keep trying...

How rude. I have stood on many occasions and must taunt viciously anybody who won't get on his two manly feet and let women and all others have a seat. For shame!

Highly inconsiderate behavior, and something that is not done with much frequency unfortunately anymore. Could this be a critique of modern society? You decide?

I'd give my seat up for children as well (and young mothers). Also applies to giving up space in elevators and opening the door for people.

Not trying to sound antedilluvian or anything, but I do this, and the woman doesn't have to be pregnant or elderly. The looks you get are indescribable.

Sorry Miss Perverse, you are living in a different day and age now. Todays parents are not teaching their children things like this any more. Chivalry has been dead for quite a while now.
