Agnosticism 5

ORIGINAL COMMENT: Dictionary definitions of an agnostic:

(a) One who believes it is impossible to know whether there is a God;

(b) One who is skeptical about the existence of God but does not profess true atheism.

I'm an agnostic. See my comments about it here.

If yours is the only true and correct religion:

* Why are there so many other religions?

* Why do they all claim theirs is the only true and correct religion?

* Why can each point to some different "holy" writing to back their claim?

I think it's much more important to be moral than to be religious. The Golden Rule is a wonderful guiding principal. Would that more people follow it.

UPDATE: One of the final disappointing straws about religion came to me via a minister. I asked him the following: "Assume a man has lived his 80 years of life without any sin whatsoever, that he has been kind, compassionate, has worked hard and diligently, has been completely moral, and has done nothing but good works. He is a Buddhist. Can he go to heaven?"

The minister thought about it and said he would have to think further about it and give me an answer the following day. The next day when he returned his answer was "No, because the man did not believe in Jesus."

If there ever was a sillier proposition, I haven't heard it. It's the kind of thinking that gives religion a bad name. And people wonder why some of us choose not to believe in things for which we have not seen evidence (although we do remain open to seeing any evidence that might sometime appear).

The belief that it is impossible to know if there is a god or an afterlife, or really any thing other than that based on material phenomena.

I am agnostic about agnosticism.

Practitioners reject man's pathetic, fearful, and vengeful interpretation of their little-hillside-protestant-firebrand-Yaweh. . .Agnostics tend to be rather bright and openminded. . .I'm sure they're hated by many. (Not to be confused with 'atheism' kids- read more.)

Agnostics get persecuted by every area of the religious spectrum (including athiests) as 'indecisive'. It's almost like going to the horse races and not betting. Someone's going to win on the day, but it won't be the agnostic. Sometimes agnosticism is born from fear, and that need not be criticized. All I can say, is they're are less dangerous than religious or nihilistic zealots..

Agnostics are those who admit they don't know if God exists or not. You can be a theist-agnostic or an atheist-agnostic.

I hold no Ill will to those who choose not to believe in any diety. In my experience if you dig a little you find out that most of these people had either no religion in their up-bringing or worse, their parents used religion as a tool to instill fear, intimidate, or rob choices and feedoms from them. It can also happen when parents dont practice what they preach. To say I dont know when asked about your faith is kind of a cop out. None of us christians knows of Gods existance, hence the term faith comes into play, and without faith in your life, not just in terms of religion but in many other ways, life can be pretty dark and hopeless. In plain terms I have been lucky enough to live moments when I knew God had to be there. When I see the ocean move on a blue sky and hear birds sing against the background of the crashing waves, I have to believe only 'a god' could originate such beauty. Maybe Im just a hopeless romantic but either way, those moments give me peace and a picture in my mind that will no doubt come to me on my death bed. Without faith, what will keep me from a dark and terrible crossover into blackness?

The closest term which I could relate to would be agnostic. If someone honestly feels that they, personally, do not see enough evidence for or against the existance of a deity/deities, they should not make assumptions. There are many different religions and belief systems out there. As for myself, I'm quite content to wait until any other evidence comes along and examine it then. I personally also believe that I should live my life in such a way that I could be proud of, regardless of the existance or non-existance of any greater being. If someone honestly feels that their faith/lack of faith is true and has brought them peace, that's great; that sort of comfort is a beautiful thing. However, I am quite content taking things as they come, and if there is more evidence either way, it should not change the way I live my life.

Agnostics who are dyslexic insomniacs stay up at night and wonder if there really is a dog.
