 | GenghisTheHun (177) 08/28/2007 | Carlism is one of my areas of expertise since the Carlists played such a prominent part in the Spanish Civil War.
The Carlists are very strong in Navarre and their symbol is the red beret. I know all of you have watched the running of the bulls in Pamplona or seen pictures of it. Notice all the red berets. Most of them are Carlists.
Carlism is an extremely conservative branch of the monarchists in Spain. In the middle of the 19th Century, the males of the Spanish Royal Family died out and in violation of the rules, the liberals stuck Queen Isabella II on the throne. The traditionalists supported Charles (Carl)os and war broke out.
We had a few Carlist wars and other outbreaks that followed. In good Spanish fashion, however, nobody ever forgives and nobody ever forgets and the Carlists perservered. In 1936, the Carlists rose during the July 18 uprising and fought for the Nationalists during the Spanish Civil War. Some writers call them the Traditionalists.
