The Upcountry is an undiscovered jewel. What a great place to retire! South Carolina is very nice with great people. The state has loads of history as well and that is for me. Did you know that South Carolina had more battles and skirmishes in the American Revolutionary War than all the other provices combined?

A more laid back atmosphere than most states, SC is a good place to raise a family. I know that because for the first 35 years of my life I lived in Greenville and have no regrets growing up in a smaller city (Greenville is no longer that small). But like everything else in life things have changed but for the most part the value system in this state has remained in tact.

Some great beaches and nice sunsets. The downside is the job market is absolutely horrible. SC is always on the top of the list for unemployment. Cost of living is decent, but jobs here need to improve. This is definitely a good ole boys state, so if you don't like that sort of thing, stay away. Not a bad place to raise a family.

South Carolina has done quite well in retaining its southern character. I've never seen a state with so many churches in my life. As America becomes more transient SC's neighboring states like Georgia and North Carolina seems to have absorbed more outside influence but it feels as if SC has some leftover elements from the Confederacy.

Indeed this state has many beautiful destinations like Charleston, Hilton Head and a beautiful beach destinations. Inland it seems like an average landscape with lots of pine forest. I could stay a while and enjoy the atmosphere in Charleston but overall SC feels staunchly southern and conservative.

You can't please all of the people, all of the time.... So with that said, I would like to go on record and advise anyone interested in locating, or visiting, South Carolina, to please do so at your earliest opportunity. The state of South Carolina is one of the most beautiful states in the nation. As it reads on the license plates "Smiling Faces, Beautiful Places", which is, indeed, a true statement, as South Carolina is probably the most friendly and beautiful state in the entire union.

I was born in Abbeville, South Caroina in 1940, and was educated in South Carolina until my enlistment in the United States Marine Corps. I also attended schools in the Chicago area for a couple of years during my high school days, in which I had no problems in transferring to their system and standards. In fact, I found that I was more advanced in the mathmatical arena than my northern counter-parts.

I chose to return to South Carolina after my service in the United States Marine Corps, and graduation from college. I returned to my home state because South Carolina offered many of the top qualities that one seeks in the determination of where to raise your children, educate your children, climate, hospitality of citizens, business conditions, personal opportunities, etc. And on top of everything else, South Carolina offers the beauty of the mountains in the Northwestern corner, the beaches from North Myrtle Beach to Folly Beach (in Charleston), the midland of the Columbia area, and much more. Yep, after sixty-six year of life, I proud to boast that I made the right decision to spend it here in dear ole' South Carolina. God, please continue to bless the Palmetto State....

Charleston is one of the friendliest cities that I have visited. Greenville has a real nice downtown and there are a ton of waterfalls and surprisingly high mountains in the far NW. Columbia is decent but nothing special. Beautiful all-around state.

Well, living in South carolina my whole life might be making me kind of biased towards the state, but here goes. I love it here. Ive been to a few states in my very short life, but by far South Carolina is my favorite. I dont understand why most of the people I speak to say "I cant wait to get out of here" and "This place is so boring" etc. etc. Yes I do hear that a lot. I would choose no other place to live. The weather is delightfull for the most part. There are exceptions, like the ice storm that kicked the upstates power for 3 days or more, and the hot, humid summers. Every state has its bad points, aint I right? I love it here, you can choose to live in the quiet secluded mountains or if your a socialite you cant live at the beach. Different strokes for different folks, am I right? And it all depends where you live in South Carolina. I live in the upstate, which is the best in my opinion. In my time I havent seen a tornado in my county, even though there are some around it. I really do love it here.

From Maine to Minnesota the rust belt economy sinks slowly into the sunset. Every year untold numbers of northerners who wish to maintain a semblance of a middle class lifestyle migrate south and west. Nowhere is this diaspora met with such howls of protest as in the south. In South Carolina they're going to fight like hell to retain a culture and lifestyle that they feel is threatened. They see how "Yankeeified" large parts of North Carolina, Georgia and Florida have become and they damn sure don't want to let it happen in their Palmetto State. So you could lure a company in the state that provided 10000 new jobs or you could find a cure for cancer, but if you're from the north you'll never really feel like you belong in South Carolina. Too bad. It's a pleasant state geographically. Not spectacular like the west, but the upstate has its Appalachian charm, and the Low Country is very appealing. Still old attitudes don't die hard, they seem to live on forever. The south seems to be the one part of the country with a permanent chip on its shoulder. That attitude rings loud and clear in South Carolina. I came down here offering my skills and the hand of friendship. Now I get the message, Oh do I ever get it. In the bad days of segregation many left the south just so they could survive. In the modern era many northerners came down here with skills and a work ethic that have transformed many parts of this state and others in the region out of an extended state of backwardness. Don't look for any thanks in South Carolina. They wish we'd all leave tomorrow. This Yankee can't wait to get the hell out.

Charleston is wonderful and the whole coastal region is pretty nice but other than that, I'm sorry, I hardly see how people could rate SC as one of the most beautiful states,(I guess you've never been to places like Colorado or Oregon). Basically flat, it could be GA, AL, MS, little to distinguish it. And to the people who rave about the weather and the "mild" climate, well yes mild in December or January. The 90 degree weather with 75% percent humidity that you find from May to October is hardly "mild". People are very friendly and I don't think it's full of racists and hicks but the educational system is terrible, (ranks 48th I think). Nor does it have the high tech job growth that other southern states like NC or VA have seen. Three stars and no more.

To Yankeehater: Amazing...I'm a "yankee" which means you know everything about me. just because you love me so much I'm going to retire to SC to piss you off and keep y'all company. Have a nice day, ya hear? Tom Yankeehater's post" "Why do y'all move here by the thousands if it is so horrible and backwards here? Want to see backwards? Try Cleveland, OH.. LOL Or maybe Newark, NJ. Try Detroit, MI for racist pigs and the nastiest city in the US. Oh what about those racist pig police in Cincinnati that were all over the news? And what about all those weirdo's running around and shooting people up there around Columbus? So these well known Cities of the North are what you guys call modern and hip? So I guess our cities should be more like Newark, Youngstown, Detroit, Cincinnati, Cleveland? Oh let's start on Cleveland. The city known as the mistake by the lake. Also the town was so poor at one time it could not afford to keep it's lights on or pave it's own streets. LOL This is what we should want in the South? NO! I am so glad that many of you Yankee tourist and transplants find South Carolina so horrible. I for one love to be rude and inconsiderate to Yanks. I also make my TRAILER near Hilton Head just as unsightly as possible so that maybe I can run off even more of you who come here to visit or move. I sho nuff loves my tractor tires on each side of my ditch out front. We do not need you here.. STOP COMING HERE PLEASE! I own a business here and if a Yankee comes in I try to treat him as rude as possible so he will leave. I don't need any Yankee money touching my hands or my employees hands or even my register. GO HOME YANKEES! We don't want you here to start with. Also on a rainy day if I see Yankee tourist on Hilton Head walking or riding their tricycles on or near the streets I do my very best to splash the hell out them and give them the finger. It gets them every time.. LMAO Yeap we here in SC are tobacco chewing backward rednecks from hell. We like toating our guns around with our Rebel flags.. Well it seems obvious to me that most people who reviewed SC have not spent much time here really. Most peop[le here want to bash SC because they are uneducated. To say We won the war is a statement I used to say when I used to think the cops down in the south would pull me over for having Jersey plates. Please go beyond your ignorance for one moment. I grew up in the Northeast and moved here to Charleston. I have travelled all over SC as well as much of the US. The guy from NC made me laugh, he speaks of trailers...so what jerk? I grew up around people with mansions and they were pompous and no one knew each other exceot through upturned noses. Down here people say hello and speak to each other. I am uncertain about your statistic but NC has lots of poor people too fool. But so what? I see NC plates and people from Charlotte come down to Folly and Charleston to spend every weekend. What's up with that? Charleston was votes most friendly city for the 4th year in a rown now. Also, out in central SC you see land...yup land. Unlike a growing number of Northeast cities where it takes me hours to get to any nature. Most people know I-95 and those are the comments you see here. I know the type, typical, judgemental people who classify everything by a little while somewhere. So anyway, the only thing I don't like about it here is some of the left turns. But it amazes me how many people think they know a place having spent a few hours or even a few days there. I commented on 2 states on this site, both of which I LIVED IN! Because you can really only KNOW a place when you live there and ONLY from your perspective. I don't like the mountains Mr. North Carolina, so where you live does not appeal to me. But that does not mean mountains suck. It just means they are not for me to live. Grow up people and stop judging a book by the cover you think you see. And yeah, the war is over, if you still see rednecks here you must be looking for something in it. I find people, and they have all been great to me.

I lived right near the boarder of SC just outside of Charlotte, NC. Man, SC is bad. They have some of the highest poverty rates in the country. I agree, to those people who visit and say it is one of the most beautiful states ever, well the tilted (yet still inhabited) trailors and shacks, which after you pass Rock Hill is almost all you see in the vast majority of SC, the state with the highest proportion of trailors in the country, it sort of takes away from whatever beauty you claim exists. South Carolina ranks very low on many livability issues; education, poverty, healthcare. This is deffinetly the most depressed state on the East Coast. This state is so bad, that unlike many of the other states I have given low ratings, I am not making fun of this one, I have pity for it. No lie, when you go through many parts of the carolinas, you wouldn't believe that you were in the USA, you'd think you were in some third world country or something, no exaggeration.

Charleston is charming- and has postcard appeal- and to be sure there are upscale images and aura at Hilton Head- however the rest of the state remains very southern and socially backward- SC has changed very little since it seceded from the union 1861.

Another reason everyone should stay out of the south. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is ok because the outsiders and tourists have taken it over. However, outside of that city is a different story. In Michigan, I rarely, if ever, encounter racism. In Ohio, the racism rate jumps. By South Carolina, it happens very often. On a family trip eight or so years ago or more, we stopped off into Sparky's Roadside Joint or something like that off the interstate near the border of SC. My mom, brother and I went to get some ice cream. This woman apparently was working on something in the kitchen and couldn't help us. We waited until she finished. Finally, a white girl came in and the woman started serving her! Three or four more customers came in and got served, but not us! Finally, I had to calm my mom and brother down and leave the store, angry myself too, before we had a fit and gave the rednecks reason to pull their shotguns out and gun us down! After that, I decided I'd never again come back to the Confederated State of South Carolina! Enjoy Dixie and Jim Crow folks, I'm never coming back!

South Carolina is one of the most beautiful states in the United States. Apparently Musicfan is as delusional as Strom Thurmond's stinky incontinent ghost. It's the most boring place i've ever visited (and that includes Mongolia). 5% of Charleston is nice, and the rest is worse than Camden, NJ. If you want to have fun go to Savannah. The best part of my visit was the ride to the airport. I hope you all rot in Hell, you possum-eating scum!

I chose to give my state a five. Not just because of Charleston either; although it is pretty it is only one of the beautiful places in South Carolina. The weather is nice and the people are even nicer. Most of the towns are quaint and filled with that wonderful southern charm and hospitality that makes us so great. True, we do have our less than picturesque places, but what state doesnt? I love South Carolina and am more than proud to call it home.

I own a house on the NC side, about 16 miles from the South Carolina border, so I'm well acquainted with the Palmetto State. It's a dump. The only thing the state's got going for it is Charleston (with some reservations) and the beaches. Charleston, once you get away from the touristy areas and the well-heeled neighborhoods (i.e., the Battery), is a typical third-rate Southern city with some areas that are downright menacing. Mrytle Beach, the Redneck Riveria, is a tawdry, cheezy, overdeveloped burg that tries to come across as a family-oriented resort, but is actually a haven for southern crackheads in the off-season. The hotels and motels (at like $17/night) are full of losers and hos on the stem from November to February. Columbia is a ho-hum university town that's about as compelling as waiting for a bus. Georgetown is a depressing wasteland that stinks. I've never been to the Greenville-Spartanburg area, but hear it's an unflushed toilet. South Carolina has a shabby, outmoded infrastructure that looks like it's something out of the 1950s. The state has the worst educational system in the country. There's a high crime rate for a state that's mostly rural, a high degree of spousal abuse and divorce and alcoholism. There's virtually no way to make a decent living in SC, because as a right to work state, there's low thresholds of salary, benefits and workplace safety. The Afro American folks there are decent, hardworking and friendly people, and so are the white women, but the white men in SC are truly less than zero: lazy, onery, ignorant, arrogant, poorly educated, parochial, boorish, ill-mannered, rascist, boring. When I asked Rafe or Kyle or Newt one time why I constantly see white men in SC out hunting or fishing or trying to fix a lawn mower out at the trailer park at 2 o'clock on a Wednesday afternoon, their response typically was, Workin's fer wimmen and nigg*rs. A considerable number of these so-called Good Ol' Boys are still fighting the war they lost 150 years, evidenced in their insistance on flying that crapsymbol of rascism, human degredation and wholesale treason, the Stars and Bars. That piece of emblematic toilet paper stands for the traditions, heritage and way of life those rednecks are so proud of. I still can't understand, however, how one could possibly be proud of traditions, heritage and a way of life that considered human beings as property, encouraged the Klan to take its nightly rides, allowed segregation, lynchings and other Jim Crow trappings to exist, and glorified those idiots who went off to be slaughtered in the 1860s for the sake of an unAmerican and inhumane value system. Finally, this state was represented in the U.S. Senate, supposedly, for over 40 years by Strom Ah Nevah Met a Sista Ah Didn't Like Thurmond, one of the most diseased bags of swine vomit ever to hold public office (which is really saying something): this speaks volumes about the retards and slackers who have made up the cracker population of this surface closet of a state for the past several decades.

I like my home state because it has a mild climate and is close to the ocean. I was really happy to live near the ocean again after so many years of living in an inland state. There is a lot of history here and a lot to do. Opinion just said that we are not part of America;alas, opinion, we tried seceding but ended up in a little conflict called the Civil War. We were trounced, so I don't think we'll step up to the plate again. Since you seem to hate the South so much, I'm glad you are moving back to the North. Judging from your comments and those of your compadres, the Northerneastern United States is a veritable paradise where the sun always shines and folks are shiny and happy. Au revoir!

Parts of this state could stand to be improved, but most of the people are very friendly, Charleston is lovely, and there are many nice, clean and uncrowded beaches, like Folly. This state does have a peculiar attraction for religious right zealots (home of Bob Jones University), but there are more than enough good people to make up for that.

South Carolina is one of the most beautiful states in the United States. Charleston is, without a doubt, a city with no rival. The colonial and antebellum history and the preserved 18th and early 19th century architecture are without equal. Charleston's greatest asset is it's people. Charleston has a civil, courteous, and gracious way of life that still exists, but is rare indeed. Visitors please respect the old world civility and charm of this one of a kind city and the charming people who have called it home for generations. As an added bonus, some of the best beaches, golf courses, and tennis courts in the country are in the greater Charleston area. There are so few cities in the United States that are unique. Charleston can join the ranks of New York City, San Francisco, New Orleans, and Savannah is truly being one of a kind.

Definitely a diamond in the rough! Nice people and some of the best food this side of the Atlantic. Charleston is of course a gem, Columbia is a great (underrated) capital/university town, and Greenville is a vibrant business center near the mountains. And the best part: no big-city hassles like in neighboring states. A good place to visit or call home.

A very beautiful state, plus Charleston is gorgeous. The good people of Charleston go to great pains to preserve their rich culture and history. Lake Moultrie is awesome for fishing and recreational boating. The people of the state are very friendly, and if you're a "damyankee," they'll love you even more if you're only passing through and not staying. The only other drawback is they have a 98-year-old Senator who is an unreconstructed racist and Dixiecrat.
