Abu Dhabi is located in South-Eastern Arabia, on the Persian Gulf. Founded in 1760, Abu Dhabi became the provisional capital of the United Arab Emirates when it was formed in 1971. Once a major center for the pearling industry, Abu Dhabi grew and modernized as a result of oil being discovered there in the 1960s. The population of Abu Dhabi is approximately 1 million people.
