Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh, located on a channel of the Dhaleswari River. Dhaka is the industrial, commercial, and administrative center of Bangladesh, and sits in the heart of the world’s largest Jute-growing region. Dhaka was inhabited as early as 1000 A.D. but came into prominence in the 17th century, as the Mughal capital, Bengal. Famous for its confectionary and handicraft industries, Dhaka came under British rule in 1765, and later became the capital of Eastern Pakistan in 1947. In 1971, Dhaka came under Indian control, and was quickly made the provisional capital of Bangladesh. Landmarks in Dhaka include the Dakeshwari Temple and the Bara Katra Palace. The population of Dhaka is estimated at 7.2 million people.
