Jerusalem is an ancient city in the Middle East, one of key importance to the religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Occupied by the Jebusites as early as the Bronze Age (2000-1550 BC), Jerusalem has been primarily associated with the Hebrews since the time of King David and King Solomon, despite falling under both Babylonian and Roman control at certain times in history, and falling under the occupation of several national and religious sects. Modern Jerusalem has been a hotbed for religious conflict, primarily in violent confrontations over land and sacred space between the Israelis and the Palestinians. Fighting between Arabs and Jews blanketed the early half of the 20th Century, culminating in the 1967 Arab-Israel War, in which Israeli forces took control of all of Jerusalem. Despite continued conflict and violence, Jerusalem grew to become Israel’s largest city in the 1980s. The estimated population of Jerusalem is 705,000 residents.
