02/13/2006 | Irish have their pecking order just as do many other groups. The Black Irish were low on the food chain and looked down upon by the "Lace Curtain Irish."
Many stories about how certain Irishmen are so dark, but I attribute it to the general mixture of races and nationalities over the centuries. Ireland was a Celtic area and a maritime area and both are amendable to outsiders who adopt their ways.

02/11/2006 | I fondly recall a college professor from back when - he had dark hair, blue green eyes and a very Irish name. I don't know what they did as a group, but, as individuals I must say, many seem to have turned out pretty darned well.

02/10/2006 | This term refers to Irish people with darker features than usual- black hair, dark eyes etc. It is thought they are descendants of Irish mixed with shipwrecked Spanish survivors of the Armada. There are also a fair amount of Carribean people with Irish last names, as the Irish were sent as essentially slaves to some islands that were English colonies in the Cromwellian era and mixed with the slaves , that's why you will find a fair amount of black people from those places with last names like O'Reilly or McMahon.
