" As a native of NJ, these people were always part of local folk-lore and legend, although they're very real, and the objects of very real prejudice and discrimination. For the most part, I believe they reside in the Ramapo Mountain region (Suffern, Mahwah, etc.), and are the descendants of Revolutionary War soldiers (and/or Hessian mercenaries; I'm not sure which), slaves, and American Indians. They're supposed to be very reclusive, although that could just be apocryphal nonsense motivated by bigotry that was passed down to me as a child. Fascinating group of people whose history should definitely be more extensively explored."
