An all-purpose heavy MG. Very effective as aircraft armament too. Downside-heavy weapon, heavy ammo. Amazing that it is still in use today.

If we are talking about the M2, keep in mind that we still use it today, over 80 years after its introduction.

UPDATE: The last M2 gunner likely hasn't been born yet. Cool, huh?

This is another great invention of John M. Browning. It was an air-cooled belt-fed machine gun and was the most formidable weapon of its kind in the war. The Germans could not believe how just about anything that moved on the western front and had a proper place for mounting had one of these formidable guns. I don't think that the military has every given them up, they are so effective.

The M2 is an amazing weapon, and one of the few weapons from World War 2 that still is in service in the 21st Century. Its not that the American Army is desperate for heavy MGs, its that John Browning's basic design is so near perfect, and you know the old saying; if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
