Accra is the capital and largest city of Ghana with an estimated population of 1.6 million people. Accra is the administrative, communications, and economic center of Ghana, noted for its lumber and plywood, textile, clothing, and chemical industries. The Ga founded Accra in the 15th century as a trade center with the Portuguese, and the present-day city was built up around British and Dutch forts. Accra was the site of the 1948 Accra Riots that led to the Ghanian Revolution and nationhood in 1957. Accra is home to the National Museum of Ghana, the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Archives of Ghana, and the Accra Center for National Culture.
