I love the stuff, but I don't think America can really take credit for this one. There are versions of it all throughout Europe.

Unfortunately for me, I could eat this stuff until I vomit. I don't share the fuzzy nostalgia a lot of New Jerseyans have for "the Shore" (I am decidedly NOT a Bruce Springsteen-Bon Jovi-Southside Johnny fan), but when I did venture down that way, I loved nothing more than stopping at one of the salt-water-taffy-custard-fudge places that proliferate on the boardwalks of Point Pleasant, or Seaside Heights, or Wildwood, or...and buying a pound or so of this stuff, and chowing down like a sugar-deprived Night-of-the-Living-Dead zombie. I have diabetes in my family, and figure this can't be the healthiest activity I could engage in, but considering the fact that, at my age, I can no longer indulge in drugs and alcohol with the same carefree insouciance I did as a youth, this is a relatively guilt-free indulgence for me. As Redd Foxx once said...we all have to die from something someday...might as well be an overdose of pure sugar bliss...what a way to go!

Anybody who doesn't like fudge must be some kind of reprobate alien.

Great, but not distinctively American. A bete noir or a Sachertorte is pretty much the full-blown version, and better-tasting anyway ...

Every Christmas my grandma sends my family some fudge. It's like a brownie, but it's more creamy and it melts in your mouth. Mmmm...
