We know now that Roberts will fill O'Connor's seat--a good thing as it makes sure no single seat on the Supreme Court is reserved for members of a certain group (in this case, women). However, if Chief Justice Rehnquist retires soon, I would like to see the 56 year old Jones replace him as Chief Justice. Let the Democrats try and filibuster that one.

I think she'll get the nod, and I hope (because you never know about these things) that above all, she will interpret the law, as called for in the US Constitution, rather than making law. Haven't we seen enough activist judges, including, at times Sandra Day O'Connor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Breyer, Kennedy, etc. who believe that since they CAN govern from the bench, they SHOULD? I don't care if she (or whoever is proposed) is conservative. I really don't. I don't care about her stance on Roe v. Wade or any other existing judicial verdicts/opinions. Just don't make new law. We have a duly elected legislative branch to do that. And Jefferson knew that the judicial branch would overstep its authority. It's time to go back to the original constitutional design where the judicial branch INTERPRETS the law. It is exactly what frightens liberals so much, that they might lose the only mechanism they have left to make law: an activist, liberal judiciary, like California's 9th Federal Circuit. This is the first, I believe, of three Supreme Court nominations (appointing a new Chief Justice in the next 2 years would be additional) for Bush. He has consulted with Congress, surprisingly, they have had much input into the choice. But, Bush won the election and the American people knew that there would be turnover on the Supreme Court. It is time for Bush to govern, according to his re-election platform. UPDATE: OK, so I was wrong. I do hope Bush sees fit to put her on the bench with one of his remaining appointments, although I would put Luttig ahead of her as a priority for conservatives.

Judge Jones is on just about every pundit's short list. She has the experience and the temperment, and if Bush wishes to fill O'Connor's seat with a female, then this well may be the one.
