 | frogio (48) 05/27/2008 | My step dad was one of those old-time doctors who still made house calls. Every Tuesday and Thursday nights I would tag along with him as he packed his little black bag with the regular doctor's necessities and hit the road. Most of his patients were liitle old widows and shut-ins who would create ailments in order to have someone come by for a simple converation. Nevertheless, at every stop my old man would write them the same prescription...10 mg ADT...which, of course, to the local pharmacists meant "Any Damn Thing"...which always comprised of a hefty dose of sugar pills.

I caught part of an episode of "Leave it to Beaver" not long ago and the doctor made a house call that evening. It would sometimes make things easier. Of course, there is home health services these days, which does help a lot.

 | Sundiszno (32) 07/20/2005 | My father was a general practitioner and made house calls until he finally gave up his practice. I used to drive him around a lot on his calls (he didn't really like to drive). Even back in the late sixties, house calls were becoming a thing of the past. One day (I believe it was about 1965 or so) my father came back from a house call, somewhat amused. He was making the call in a less than upscale neighborhood when a young, somewhat scruffy guy approached him and asked him if he was a doctor (his black medical bag was pretty much of a giveaway). My father was a bit unnerved, figuring that maybe the guy was a druggie who was going to mug him for whatever was in his bag, but said that he was indeed a doctor. They guy then said Jesus, I didn't think anyone still made house calls, Doc!, and went on his way, to may father's relief.
