Remember double digit inflation and double digit interest rates. Remember humiliation and retreat? Remember malaise and malfeasance, misfeasance and nonfeasance?

Then you remember Jimmy Carter. Lately he has become a carper and whiner, when he is not hammering nails into walls, but I do agree with some of his latest Middle East pronouncements.

Hard to believe someone as intelligent as Carter could govern so incompetently.

Not at all. He wasn't a strong president but he is a die hard humanitarian who does a lot of good. He can use the celebrity he got from being president to do even more good. Carter is a great man.

Maybe he was not a very effective President, but he was the last DECENT man to hold the title.I am proud to have at least ONE ex-president who works his butt off to help the poor and needy in this country.Instead,Bush #1 is making a bundle as a war profiteer!

There is no denying that this man's stint in the White House is a sore legacy. However, he has been out of office for 25 years and in the meantime has worked as a human rights advocate and humanitarian. I am puzzled how this qualifies as screwing up anything.

A lousy president who has done real humanitarian work since his term ended. What a spiteful listing.

He had his chance years ago and didn't quite succeed. A horrible president that wasn't a horrible ex-president, and has now just become a muttering old fart.

How is Jimmy Carter screwing America? He's only been actively helpful since getting out of office!

He led by example. Forget that he was a one-term president. The fact was that America progressed when he was president from 1977-1981. Human rights was a factor when it came to his foreign policies. We were harsher on countries run by right-wing dictators and we sympathized with the torchered rather than the torcherers. America never dropped a bomb under his term. He wanted to move the nation forward and into the future. His 4 years made America better, unlike Reagan who radically reshaped the nation back to its tumultuous past. The nation would've been better off had Carter served a second term. He was much more aware of America's problems than his successors and predecessors.

Aside from his horrendous performance as a single-term US President, he broke the long-standing tradition shared by former presidents to eschew partisan rhetoric, particularly any criticizing of a sitting president of the other party. Eisenhauer did not criticize Kennedy, Johnson never criticized Nixon, Nixon & Ford did not criticize Carter, Reagan & Bush ('41) did not criticize Clinton, but Jimmy Carter entered the partisan fray on several occasions speaking out regarding GWB's policies, sullying the honor traditionally accorded former presidents.
