This stuff is awesome!!!! Why would you pay more for the same great nutrition? No seriously... I started feeding this food to one of my dogs when he was about 4 years old... he actually changed colors!! His coat used to be black but it turned white real fast. Then he started growing things... First an extra ear, then an extra eye. Before long, my dog had a least two or three of everything!!! Do NOT feed this food to your dog!!! He will die and then turn into a zombie!!! Seriously!? Is this food really as bad as people say it is? If so, how could it still be on the market? It IS the number 1 selling dog food in America... Oh wait, I know... it's a government cover up!!! They are allowing it to be sold so they can put evil preservatives in it!!! Ahhhhh!!!! Organic food help us!!!

My 11 year old Welsh Corgi just died from Kidney Disease. She was diagnosed in November and passed away in May. She had been fed Ol Roy her whole life. Unfortunately, I was unaware at the time how bad this food was for her. It was the biggest mistake of my life feeding her this food. Please research dog food before buying.

this dog food is OBVIOUSLY garbage. the ingredients are awful and this company has had TONS of recalls over the years, mostly Salmonella poisoning and causing liver damage. how this hiddious brand has the general rating it does puzzles me.I can understand with the economy failing it can be hard to feed quality dog food but there ARE better foods. I think Kirkland Signature is the best food in that price range, if you can afford better, there are better foods out there. here are the first 5 ingreidents in Kirkland Signature dog food :Chicken, chicken meal, whole grain brown rice, cracked pearled barley, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and Vitamin E)now here are the first 5 ingreidents of Ol' Roy dog food :Ground yellow corn, soybean meal, ground whole wheat, corn syrup, poultry fat, Meat and bone meal (Animal Fat Preserved with BHA and Citric Acid)- meat and bone meal!??! that could be anything!! that could be cat and dog meat for all you know.-perserved with BHA!?! this is a KNOWN cancer causing agent.

My rottweiler died of cancer and I believe these supermarket brands contributed to that. I have tried to educate myself on what to feed my dogs now and hopefully my new pup will have a much longer life. I would never even consider feeding my dogs this garbage.

For those wondering why Ol'Roy is so terrible and so harmful to their pets, I can tell you at least one reason. The so called calcium in it is made up primarily from chicken bones and feathers. It has plenty of calcium, but it's not a digestible kind, and you're starving your pet of the calcium needed in their proper diet. And who knows what else is empty, useless nutrition. My dad, a veterinarian of 49 years before he retired at 76 years old, would see people checking Ol' Roy out at Wal-Mart and just shake his head sadly. It's a shame this stuff is still on the market. If you want a good store found dog or cat food, Purina is still one of the very top. If your pet has special needs, ask your vet about Science Diet appropriate for their problems or a cheaper store bought alternative, it won't be as good as what Science Diet can provide, but it can help and definitely be better and not threatening to your pet's health like Ol' Roy is.

I named my dog "Ol'Roy", after this great line of pet food products...NOT! Ol'Roy is pure crap. They had recalls on a lot of their stuff a few years back because it was causing kidney failure. I have given the beef basted biscuits to my bullmastiff and I didn't know he could shit so much. This happened the day after I gave him but two of the biscuits. I realize that different breeds can have different digestive tendencies, and that what is good for one may be bad for another, but I would recommend feeding natural products regardless. It makes sense to me that dogs do better eating things they would find in the wild. I feed "Taste of the Wild" grain-free dog food http://www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com/ and we make our own treats, which is actually very easy and economical. More info on that here http://greenliving.suite101.com/article.cfm/diy_nat ural_dog_treat_recipes . In researching various foods - www.dogfoodanalysis.com - I have found that the only storebought brand that is worth feeding is the Kirkland brand. You can get it at Costco, perfect for those with financial concerns and a decent blend.

For financial reasons I switched to Ol Roy for my 3- 5 year old dogs. Two of the 3 immediately began to lose hair by the handful and developed big red spots on the skin which smelled awful. I stopped the Ol Roy and within 2 days their hair started growing back and the red spots are clearing up. I don't know what it is, but I will never feed it to my dogs again.
sandy1616 05/03/2009
Skin and Coat Formula - Brown Bag - Actuall a better food than the Purina lines, Science Diet or most of the Iams/Ukenuba, and a lot cheaper. I work with rescue groups and have read every dog food label I could find looking for the most bang for the buck. The Skin and coat formula has lamb meal as the first listed ingredient. It does contain corn but so do many of the higher end brands. The other varieties of Ol Roy have corn as their first ingredient. I feed my own dogs Taste of the Wild and believe firmly that grains have no place in a canine diet. However, many times it has come down to finding a less expensive food to prevent owners from having to surrender their pets. I often recommend the skin and coat formula but no other. It is comparible to many of the lower end "premium" foods at about a 1/4 of the price.

I gave this food one star, only because I couldn't give it NO STARS. When I adopted my Lab, his previous owners were feeding him Ol' Roy, because they vet said it was OK. But people, use common sense, how nutritious could a food be at $7 for a 40 pound bag!! Think about human food -- McDonald's costs $1 for a burger. Nutritious food from the grocery store costs so much more! Owen was having digestive problems, and had diarrhea, or was throwing up almost every day. He was lethargic, and also underweight. Dogs have a problem digesting corn - many dogs are allergic (humans can digest it, which is why so much of food contains it in some form). Same with Soy products. Some Ol' Roy products may list meat as the first ingredient. BUT, this is meat INCLUSIVE of its water content. In order to make kibble, the water must be removed. Dog food ingredients (as well as human food) are listed on the bag in order of weight. Meaning, the product that is used the most will weigh the most, and is listed first. HOWEVER, after the water is removed, it moves the meat product down much further on the list. Things you want to look for: MEAT MEAL (water has already been removed); NO SUGAR (or high fructose corn syrup, or anything ending in -ose); if it has a fat, you want the source named (CHICKEN FAT, not ANIMAL FAT); NO BEET PULP; Please, please, please!! Read www.dogfoodanalysis.com -- they don't review Ol' Roy, but they do review other foods (including other popular brands such as Science Diet, Iams, Purina, etc.), and they TELL YOU WHY they do or do not recommend certain brands of food. You may ask, why did my vet recommend Science Diet if it's no good? VETS DO NOT GET NUTRITION TRAINING. Science Diet, Purina, etc., come to your vets office, talk about how "good" their food is, and try to get your vet to recommend it. Similar to when pharmaceutical reps go to your doctor's office and try to get your doctor to recommend their drug over another company's drug.

I am really sorry i have to say this but i bought the 6 cans of wet dog food. When i got it home i told my 4 year old to open it and feed or St Bernard.I went to the bath room and heard my son yell i came out to see what was wrong with him and there were these white things crowling out of the box that my son threw.when i say they were everywhere i mean on my table the floor. I made my husband take this back to walmart right away and the smell was so bad u cant beleave this smell.Walmart wouldnt even open the bag they could smell it with the bag closed. They told us we would have to call olroy and gave us there number and they gave us free dry dog food another brand and gave me the money back for it and anything that was in the same bag.I have been trying to call the company but noone will answer is anyone else having same problem. I also threw my table away if you could sit at a table u know had magets on it u have a better tummy then me.I just cant beleave no one will call me back or even try to make this right i work for a vary big company and if something like this would happen and us not take care of it i would hate to see what would happen.Just thought i would see if anyone else has had the same or like problem. If they would of made this right i guess stuff happens like i said i have a big dog and buy lots of dog food a week

I think expensive dog food is a total waste of money. I fed our 2 dogs Ol roy. I don't care what the experts or vets say. It's all about making money. In fact, one vet told me that table scraps are fine...he feeds them to his dog. My last dog was a dalmation/lab and lived 14 yrs. and lived on Ol Roy canned and dry food, Ol Roy dog biscuits and table scraps at least 3 times a week. Ever since we were kids, we feed all our cats and dogs practically the cheapest food out there and they were healthy, playful and lived a full life. So, that's not luck, thats proof...give me a break, they are animals. Animals have a tougher digestive system. They can handle it.So keep spending all your money on expensive dog food. It's no different from expensive shampoos and for that matter, people food. I don't buy necassarily the cheapest food and I don't buy the most expensive.

I put my 2 year old newfoundland dog on the Ol Roy Complete Nutrition dog food for all breeds. I introduced it gradually in his old food over several days. OMG the day he had it as 100% of his diet, he got massive explosive diarrhea!!! He did not have enough energy to get up and squat, he just went all over himself, it was just pouring out, you can hear it and the smell's enough to make you vomit! Pulled him toward the bathroom and he pees himself the same way. Give him a bath, take him out to let him do his business (for the sake of our carpets) and he had a serious puddle of rectal bleeding, it looked like he had a menstrual period, and I'm not trying to be funny! There were blood clots in his feces. I don't know what damage this food has done! I am worried about my dog and in this economy I can't afford a vet right now. Sure I paid less on a 44 lb bag of dog food but now I have to throw out 40 lbs of it! I'm no longer feeding him this crap! Our house stinks like hell. This is a 2 year old, 100% house-trained, GOOD dog who loves to please. Those of you who have experience with this breed will know what I mean, he's an awesome dog. Don't feed your dog this crap to save money! You'll pay dearly when he turns up ill or possibly dead. I'm hoping our dog will recover and the rectal bleeding doesn't worsen.
maltowner 04/18/2009
My Maltese has been eating this brand of food for over a year with no problems whatsoever. There is no reason believe it is doing her any harm.Frankly, I find some of these 'horror stories' very hard to believe. There is nothing wrong with this food.
nascarfan 04/16/2009
We just rescued a small dog from a home and they were feeding him ol roy. After reading the review below we started to change him to a better food right away. After 2 days of switching him to purina we are having some problem with him being sick. Thankyou for the reviews so we can be more responsible pet owners.

I bought this food because the colored bag looked neat and it was cheap. I brought it home and poured my lab a nice big bowl for his dinner. He ate it and looked less than happy, as if it was 4am and there was nothing else around for chow. Over the next few weeks he began to explode out of his anus, like a shotgun blast all over my new white sofa. It was a blood bath of stank dog feices. it stunk to high hell, it stuck to everything like slim, it was like a rotten carp baking in the sun. 4 days later or betsy began to have what appeared to be a massive stoke. one pupil was blow her entire right side no longer worked. NOTHING AT ALL, that stank poo ran our of the R side of her backside like the mightly mississippi. As we were getting ready to load her into the car and bring her into the vet she began to have a seizure at which time she voided everything that was in her from everyhole. When the seizure stopped she was all confused, didnt know who we were and began to maul everything and everybody around all while voiding. So her mouth which is now nipping at everything/one is dripping half digested Ol' Roy (which has got to be made from road kill, placentas, "corn" (ive seen corn as it passes and this is somewhat a close sample) and what ever else the street sweeper picks up on its moring rounds) Ol Betsy now looks and acts like the zombies in the dawn of the dead. When we finally got her to the vet that placed her on hospice and now only has a few days left. Solid work Ol Roy you killed my lover

Old roy is the worst dog food ever! anyone who says that their dog does good on it you are the most ignorant poorly educated person on the planet. If you dont believe me google 'whats in commercial pet food'. You will be horrified. Orijen or any similar brand might not give your dog diarrhea but what happens when you switch from shit food to high quality, your precious dog will go through a detox. meaning that his body will purge all the bad stuff. hot spots, watery eyes, diarrhea, ect... will all get worse before it gets better. wolves in the wild live to 12-15 years in the wild, why do we consider a house dog geriatric at 6? working at the vets you rarely see a dog over 12. why is this??? ITS THE SHITTY FOOD!!!! People there was this guy who made is own special dog food and he owned sled dogs. He ran the idatarod(sp??) with dogs that were up to 17 years old. Please google/youtube it, you will be horrified if you actually give a shit for your dog.

This is the absolute worst dog food you could buy. Euthanized animal meat is among the meat by products in this so called food. And corn is the first ingredient, something that is of no nutritional value to a dog. If it is a product I wouldn't eat, then I wouldn't feed it to my dog! I have seen several people say that is cheap so they can afford to feed their dog. If you can't afford to feed your dog a decent food, then you probably can't afford to take them to the vet when they are sick either. You shouldn't have a dog! There is minimal nutritional value in this product and anyone who says their dog does well on this crap doesn't know what a healthy dog looks and acts like. Frankly, any food you can buy at a grocery store is not good for your dog. Go to a good pet supply warehouse or kennel and buy good food like Eagle Pack Holistic or Canidae. It isn't as cheap as Ol Roy, but your dog will really thrive on it. And they won' t even need as much since these food actually contain quality meat products that their bodies can use more easily.

~ Rating is for Ol' Roy Skin & Coat (Lamb/Rice) ~ Our dogs (Cane Corso's, Mastiff X's, Schipperkes and rescues) LOVE this food (we feed Ol' Roy Skin & Coat - Lamb & Rice) and they've all done beautiful on it. Especially dogs in rescue/foster. However, it's hard to find! It's always the empty shelf and I've driven/checked 4 or 5 Wally's from San Bernardino all the way to the Hi-desert, every day at times to try and catch it in stock. If we do find a bag or two or full shelf, we buy them out and ask for whatever they have in the back/stockroom. My boyfriend has been successful catching a bag or two at the Wally in Lancaster or Palmdale (SoCal). What is up with that??? We're at the point where we're offering to order a pallet or two, just so we can get it. Anyone else using this specific food run into the same probs? My BF doesn't mind buying the smaller bags, but since I do rescue, I prefer to buy the larger/bulk. (Even tho, if you do the math, the 18/20 lb bag is cheaper in the long run - go figure!). Thanks! Angie Cane Corso Rescue (SoCal)

I have used a few premium dog foods and the ol-roy high performance has been just as good.[brown bag] But as I hear it it is being discontinued and no longer accesible any one know why. I know it is not because of poor quality I run 9 hounds and they all do great on it.
Faustao 01/05/2009
Exactly, hbueain. Dogs are mostly carnivorous, who ever decided they should be on a diet of cereal grains and undigestible by-products? It's common sense, really.
hbueain 01/05/2009
Unless the food you are eating is from my garbage can, Ol'Roy should not be the food for your precious pet. Read the ingredient list there is Nothing, absolutely nothing nutritious in Ol'Roy. Dogs eat meat, not rotten corn left overs and long name chemicals. Other big brand dog food is bad enough, and Ol'Roy is the worst. You should take your dog to the vet and put him/her to sleep if you insist on feeding them this crap. Your dog deserves better.
ibrayb 01/04/2009
I've been feeding our black lab Ol' Roy for about a year, and she looks great. The vet asked what we were doing to make her coat so shiney (egg whites? Special Baths?). Nope. Walmart dog food. For those people who are so quick to point out that we should not be feeding dogs so much corn, go read the labels on everything you eat over the course of a year. If less that 80% of your diet has been somehow directly or indirectly influenced by corn I'd be shocked! Give 'em plenty of clean water, play your dog hard, and give them plenty of attention--your dogs will do well with 'Ol Roy. If you buy and raise highly strung, super sensitive breeding experiments, well, you get what you asked for...
mygreatdane 01/03/2009
Hi springermoron! Ever read the ingredients? DUH? Any food that begins with YELLOW CORN sucks! So be sure to check your precious science diet and the like because they all start with it! The only foods worth a crap are those that begin with meat (canine's number one protien source in the wild). Most companies have some foods that begin with a real product not a filler and the Ol' Roy Skin and Coat begins with lamb! I hope that your slanted "doggie show" views can take a hit here!
springermomx3 01/03/2009
Anyone who feeds this food is totally ignorant. This is the absolute WORST food you could possibly feed your dog. It would be like giving your kid chicken mcnuggets with a cup of sugar for breakfast lunch and dinner. Horrible!
7Jenna 01/02/2009
To whom it may concern, I am very disappointed in Ol' Roy puppie chow, I got a 8 week old puppy 5 days before christmas I fed my puppy Ol' Roy puupy chow and he got saminell posioning and I ended up with a $350.00 Vet bill right before christmas. Yes the vet said it was the dog food, so be careful what you fed your pets. Jenna
prettyfly1013 12/28/2008
I've always liked Ol Roy, but recently thought I'd try "upgradng" to a food called Orijen that is supposed to be super premium, grain free, high protien and all that but it just made my dog have the runs, his skin/coat dry, and runny eyes...so much for getting what you pay for... I guess something in it he had a bad reacton to... maybe the garlic? I've heard thats not good for dogs...back to Ol Roy and he's dong much better, maybe it has lots of corn and "filler" but at least nothing he's alergic to...
kgh 12/18/2008
The red bag complete nutrition is better now than the past and all my dogs do well on it. I have raised several dogs from birth and they all love Ol' Roy Hi Performance (brown bag) and complete nutrition (red bag) and they look great. My only beef with Ol Roy is that they have raised their prices about 50% like most dog food companies have in the last couple years and refuse to drop the prices back down now that gas has fallen for months now.
sparkie21 12/17/2008
To whom ever it may concern; I'm very disappointed in the last 2 bags of Ol'Roy Meaty Chunks & Gravy bags of dog food I have bought from Wal-Mart. The price is way up the bag sizes have went from 50lbs to 40lbs and the nuggets are different in size. Wal-mart sign in store shows 44lb bag at $17.00 and some cents and the bag you get is a 40 lb bag. I know the economy is not great lately because I'm out of work. But come on. How about running some coupons on this brand of dog food. Please keep the 50lb bags. I have three dogs I feed and always purchase the largest bag. Thank you. Barbara Sparks 111 N. Border ST. Troy, IL 62294 618-667-1913
BradWexler 12/07/2008
And admit it...the only you noticed this brand was because of the price. I'm not rich but I love my dog and wouldn't cheat them of their health...just because a dog costs $1000 doesn't make them any better than any other one, just means you picked a dog based on it's breed and not because it needed help.

For about 6 years, I've used Dinner Rounds as a treat for my dog (instead of for her meals.) She loves this stuff! It is one of the highlights of her day when I give her a couple of pieces. My neighbors with dogs started using this food as treats and they all rave about it. Plus it makes us feel better knowing it is actual dog food instead of the usual high calorie treats. A couple of months ago, my local Wal-Mart stopped carrying it, so I started searching around other Wal-Mart stores. No one has it. Can anyone confirm if Dinner Rounds are still being manufactured? I can't seem to get any return calls from the local store manager. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Kwinnypoo 11/21/2008
I have fed all sorts of brands of dog food, from Ol'Roy to Evo to Natural Balance, to Purina, to Iams. I honestly cannot say I have noticed a bit of difference between the "high quality" foods and the "low quality" foods.
ssarahbrown 11/20/2008
I bought this stuff accidentally but decided to try it anyway. BIG MISTAKE. My dog was acting like a crack addict. If I could rate this 0 that's what it'd get. First let me give you some background info. My 11 year old yorkie is a very picky and slow eater. I give him about 1 1/2 cups of food and it takes him about 2-3 days to eat it. When I filled his bowl with Ol' Roy he chowed it down so fast that he was begging for more later that day. He got ridiculously hyper then would crash for hours. He is normally a pretty outgoing guy with lots of character so when he would sleep for 6 hours, I knew something wasn't right. And he's only acted this way since I gave him Ol' Roy. He's been eating it for about 3 weeks now and needless to say, we've just switched him off of it!
Mordhom 11/12/2008
Dont buy this crap, I have tryed it over a few years we first gave it to our lab and well non stop crapping, well same with my two other dogs over a period of 8 years or so, now I tryed it agian since I was low on cash and well I switch him over slowly and well now he cant even hold his crap and he can not hold his s*** at all and he went all over the floor several times in a exloding fashion it was also just leaking out his rear wile he was walking he has been out 8 times in the last hour to... Don't buy it unless you started your dog on it since puppy age or else.. I am warning you the people who have dogs that can eat this crap probley could just feed there dogs diarrhea and still have no problems out of them just because there stomach has became so hard from eating this crap they could feed there dog a boot and the dog would have the stomach to handle it. I will not agian ever try this product again. I wish I could get them to pay for my carpets to be cleaned.. after this round.

THIS DOG FOOD IS HORRIBLE. I had two puppies a bassett hound and a blue heeler. The bassett hound died in three days and the blue heeler is in criticial condition. I would not recommend this to any animal

We've been feeding our dogs Ol Roy for years and they are very healthy. Not to mention the fact that anything else we feed them makes them sick. Our dogs have beautiful coats. There is nothing wrong with Ol'Roy. I love it.

I believe 'Ol' Roy' is Rush Limbaugh's favorite food....oh wait, that's gruel.

Our dogs only eat Ol Roy Complete and love it but, I have 4 dogs and it is more convient to buy 50 lbs instead of 44 lbs. Hopefully you can go back to selling 50 lbs and we can stay with Ol Roy. Melissa

We've been buying this brand ever since "Recon"(German Shep./Rottie mix) was a pup. It's the only thing he'll eat. The vet and everyone who sees him says he's in beautiful shape with a very healthy coat. If he's happy, we're happy!

Take a gun, and shoot your canine between the eyes. Kill him quickly instead of slowly feeding this crap! Read the in ingriedients PEOPLE, it's a slow death feeding this crap! Save a penny, kill your dog.........RIDICULOUS!

I got a bag of this dog food and my dogs ended up having problems controling thier blatters and had really runny poop. And my mom also got a bag of the stuff...she lives on the other side of the country and her dogs had the same problem. As soon as we switched our dogs were fine...this stuff is CRAP!

This is a good buy got the money. We can get a 40lb bag for only $19.00. The dogs love it and it goes a long way with the big dogs that we have (Great Danes).

I have three dogs. Two Siberian Huskies and One Basset Hound. I have been feeding them with Ol'roy and have never had a problem. They all look healthy and strong. They always eat their and never leave any.

fed this after hootch lost his hair on purina dog chow. he did just as well on this as anything else. i just don't care for feeding him corn and by-products. not to mention i had to feed him 4 cups of this to 2 cups of ultra premium (innova) food.

I fed Pedigree for years and my dogs all got fatty tumors/bone cancer and lymphoma. I have been feeding Old Roy for over 8 years now and not one fatty tumor. I have a St. Bernard cross just came from the vet today for an injury, he said her coat was the best he's seen in a long time and that over all for a dog her size and breed she was in phenomenal shape and should be around for many years to come. I have 5 dogs now and if I change them off of Old Roy they all get diarrhea. I feed it dry once daily.

This food should be illegal. Not only has it been recalled like... countless times, they found the junk they use to put dogs and cats to sleep in it. Which can only mean one thing; euthanised pets were included in the ingredients. Which means, guess what? Any dog eating this food, HAS ate dogs and cats. Sick, isn't it? Not only are you feeding unknown sources of meat (that's what meat by-products are, duh) you're feeding cats and dogs. Just the thought alone sickens me. Anyone who feeds this, please note, it was recently recalled. Google it for information.

This dog food is like feeding a strict of McDonald's to your pet every day!!! The dog's hair is dull and falls out in clumps. The dog's over all health is horrible. DO NOT BUY OL ROY DOG FOOD!!!!!!
