 | GenghisTheHun (177) 05/25/2007 | I rode the trains a lot in the 1940's and early 1950's, and they were always steamers. That cloud of white and the noise when the engine cranked up was always scary. My grandparents lived near a switch yard and I spent days, if not weeks, watching the engines working up the consists.

 | blue47 (13) 05/25/2007 | Just barley, I was real little. My grandfather worked for the railroad so I was around it when young, so I remember the train taking on coal and water.

 | Sundiszno (32) 07/22/2005 | Steam locos always fascinated me. they just seemed so much more massive than diesels or electric locos (although in reality quite a few were relatively small). I lived near the New York, New haven, & Hartford main line and can remember plenty of steam locos pulling freights. I also used to be pretty scared when I was little and we'd go to the train station for a ride to NYC - I always thought that somehow or other the engine would run off the tracks and run over me, and was always apprehensive about the steam coming from the pistons (I think that's where it comes from - I am technically somewhat inept) when the loco slowed down. The valve gear and connecting rods were a particular fascination.
