Harare is the capital and largest city of Zimbabwe. Harare is also Zimbabwe’s administrative center, as well as the nation’s commercial and communication center. Tobacco, maize and cotton are traded in Harare, and gold is mined near the region. Harare was founded in 1890 as a fort for the Pioneer Column. The city was originally named Salisbury, but was changed to Harare in 1982 to commemorate the 2nd anniversary of Zimbabwean independence. The estimated population of Harare is 1.5 million people.
