06/26/2006 | Sol Star is a very interesting character. He came from Montana with Seth Bullock to go into the hardware business in Deadwood. He is Jewish, the only Jew in town, and is constantly mocked by Al Swearengen because of this fact. Star does not rise to the bait and rises to become a power in the camp.
The real life Sol Star lived his entire life in Deadwood. The hardware store burned down towards the end of the 19th Century, so Bullock and Star built the Bullock Hotel that still stands in Deadwood although now it contains a gambling casino.
Star served in the South Dakota Legislature after statehood and was the Clerk of Courts of Lawrence County, South Dakota, for many years.
I checked out the Bullock Hotel when I was in Deadwood and it is nice and historical. Evidently a ghost haunts the place according to the locals.
