Charlie Utter was a real person and indeed was the companion of Wild Bill Hickock. Charlie was out of the camp when Wild Bill was killed, but he claimed the body.

Unlike the character in the series, Charlie was a dandy, a snappy dresser, and it is said that he bathed daily!

Charlie knocked around various mining towns in the West until he got to Socorro, New Mexico. After that, his trail disappears and history does not know what happened to him.

his and calamity janes interactions were humorous. i liked charlie utters personality. he was good natured but didn't let calamity jane push him around though she tried.
