 | GenghisTheHun (177) 06/19/2006 | The real life Jack McCall was born in Kentucky and did shoot Wild Bill Hickock in Deadwood.
Deadwood was Indian Country at the time and no courts existed to try the crime. He was tried by a miners' court in Deadwood and acquitted.
After those proceedings McCall fled to Wyoming Territory but the authorites did not recognize the trial as legal, arrested McCall, and sent him to Yankton, Dakota Territory.
McCall was tried in the Territorial Court of Dakota, convicted and hanged on March 1, 1877. He was buried with the noose still around his neck. I have seen an historical plaque in Yankton noting the event. The grave of McCall was secretly moved after the burial, and today, nobody knows where the body is buried.
