 | GenghisTheHun (177) 06/19/2006 | Gerald McRaney does a bang up job playing George Hearst, the ruthless businessman who is attempting to buy all the good mining claims in Deadwood. Hearst actually comes to Deadwood to live and slowly gains control through force, guile and money.
The real life Georg Hearst actually bought up the good claims in Deadwood and established the Homestake Mine that for years was the largest gold mine in the world.
The low price of gold until just recently caused Homestake Mine to close after operating for a century and a quarter. Will gold as high as it is, it would probably be profitable today.
The real life George Hearst was the father of William Randolph Hearst and George served as a Democrat in the United States Senate at the end of the 19th Century.
The real life George had interests in the mines of Nevada, Montana and other sites. He was a true 19th Century buccaneer.
