 | kitkat25 (0) 07/08/2008 | My dogs enjoy this food (raw instinct) and I feel good about the ingredients but I have noticed lately, the bags I get, the kibble is all cracked up. The whole bottom of the bag is not useable. I wonder if this is a problem in shipping or if it is manufactured that way. I used to feed the raw food but my dogs stomach is extremely sensitive. He seemed to get sick a lot more often when he was eating raw.
I noticed that since I have switched from NV to Orijen, my dogs poo has much less odor and it is firmer. I guess overall, so far, I am having a better experience with Orijen but it has only been 3 weeks.

 | mcotter11 (0) 04/29/2008 | We love this. My 9 year old lab was having anal gland problems and by swithing him to the chicken and Turkey frozen Raw mixed with dry, cleared up the stink and gland issues, firmed up his feces. He eats his whole dinner now, where as before he would ho hum about it. Rating a 4 instead of 5 due to price.

 | FourFish (1) 02/11/2008 | Just out of curiosity-if you feed the raw diet can your pets get tape worm from the "raw" meat??
I just had 2 dogs & 2 cats start meds for tape worm in all 4 & they all eat it?
.......they all love it-great way to get them to take meds but could it be the cause?

 | Leafy (0) 01/25/2008 | My dogs did terrible as well. I was feeding them Nature's Variety Prarie Venion and Millet Formula and they both had very grainy stools for 3 weeks. It was just foul! I switched to their Instinct formula (grainless) and found that their stools became very starchy and just very soft!!?? I dun know why this is happening becos I read good reviews in this brand!! No doubt it is grainless but how much tapicoca did they put inside their Instinct diets? and how many % is MEAT?? =(( I changed them to Orijen and they're doing well so far. (nice firm stools with less smell)

 | silhouettepoms (0) 01/09/2008 | I've been feeding the raw chicken & turkey for about 2 years now. I breed and show pomeranians and they do very well on this particular formula. I did find that the beef and lamb and other formulas tended to give them bad diarrhea, so I stick with the chicken/turkey and they love it. I have switched a number of new dogs straight onto it with no ill effects, and only had 1 or 2 that were picky and wouldn't eat it. Usually they scarf it up. I've tried the kibble made by NV and that tended to give my dogs the runs, so I REALLY like the raw but am not a fan of the kibbles. Instead I feed either Eukanuba or Wellness kibble in the mornings and then the raw at night. One note though, if you have small dogs who like to scarf their food up really quickly, be sure to cut the medallions/patties into bite size pieces, I had one who eats too fast nearly choke to death the other week when she bit off more than she could chew. Thawing it more thoroughly may help with this too, I thaw mine in the fridge for 24 hrs and sometimes it is still a bit thick in places.

 | pawprints (0) 01/07/2008 | I started feeding my dog this because my vet recommended it. Her behavior changed dramatically. She started panting, pacing and hypersalivating. I don't know if she had a stomach ache or if she was sensative to one of the many ingredients. I think Nature's Variety is a lot of hype.

 | suzyelle (0) 12/31/2007 | I bought my puppy the Nature's Variety Raw chicken because I was
so impressed with the incredients on the label. This gave him
Gastroenteritis - Diarrehea and blood in his feces. Poor thing :( I
feel awful for having put my best friend through this. My vet said this
food was just a hype and recommended W/D Canine. We'll see how Gunther
reacts.

 | jaspersmom1 (2) 12/16/2007 | Unfortunately my dog did TERRIBLE on this food. First I tried to wean him onto the raw very slowly. Did OK at first but then came the non-stop vommiting and diarrehea. Maybe it was too much for my older dog. Then I tried the dry food. It made his stomach make the worst noises and his poo tripled in size. Too much fiber and grains for him. I was very unimpressed by what this food did for my dog. Not every food is for every dog, though. What works for some may not work for others.

 | kibby1 (0) 11/20/2007 | We have two 2 yr. old English Mastiffs and one 12 year old St. Bernard. They have been on NV prairie kibble for a year. The St. Bernie acts like he's 2. They rotate between all of the varieties. The St. Bernie doesn't care for the beef as much as the other formulas. We have to watch to not overfeed b/c it will make their bowels soft. It's a great food.

 | abbyj (0) 11/16/2007 | My dog loves the raw frozen foods. And I love the ingredients (95% meat, organ, and bone). It's a win-win! Great food. Also very convenient and easy feed the correct amount since it is already divided into 1 oz portions.

 | kdell (0) 11/11/2007 | My dog was eatting this for about 4 years, but I started seeing that she was eatting less and less unless I mixed her food with other things. This is definitly a good product, a little pricy, but well worth it. I have used all their products, even the raw. I did just order her the canned lamb as I always mix her dry with canned and she loves it! One thing I do want to add is that I did feed her the raw insticnts dry and she had the runs badly and it didn't stop so I had to mix it with another bag of the regular natures variety.

 | npopova (0) 10/26/2007 | I am very confused and don't know where to go for advice... I switched my 1 year old Labrador to Nature's Variety (Prairie) Lamb, Oatmeal formula. He seems to be eating it ok, but I am not sure if the ingridients in it are so great for dogs. I mean, there are sooo many ingridients, various kinds of eggs, lamb liver, hearts, honey. Are these really good for dogs? Any advice from someone who knows about dog nutrition will be highly appreciated. I am debating between Wellness and Nature's Variety.

 | barneyboy (1) 10/19/2007 | Switched my beagle to the Raw Instinct dry formula (after reading the comments here), along with rotations of their many flavors of canned food and raw medallions. Within days I noticed that his coat has never been softer. He doesn't lick or scratch himself nearly as much either. I think I found the food I've been looking for... well done NV!
Edit: Ok, after a while we have taken my Beagle off of the Raw Instinct and switched him to to the Prairie diets. The reasons are four fold: 1) The Prairie's currently have more flavors (although I heard that the Raw Instinct will add more flavors soon) 2) The higher protein diet was giving him bad gas 3) He was gaining weight (high protein diet with not enough activity - which is my fault) 4) I'm a tad worried about things I have read concerning elevated levels of Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) with high protein diets
So far so good with the Prairie diets. The protein content seems to be just right for my dog's activity level; and no more smelly gas :-)

 | petanarchist (8) 10/19/2007 | Just wanted to inform that k9cuisine (http://www.k9cuisine.com) is having a HUGE blowout on Nature's Variety canned until 10/31/2007. Normally $68 (including shipping), they are selling it at $24.99 (free shipping on orders over $50.00).
(Original Review) In my ever-so-humble opinion:
The owner of my local kennel is a huge fan of Nature's Variety, specifically the Raw Instinct. On her recommendation I tried it a couple of times with no success for my guys. Yes, I know how to transition food; yes, I know how much to feed, yada, yada, yada.
It is obvious from the reviews that this food works for many people; however, like a good minority of others, my dogs did not like it - we are an Orijen family now (and some Evo as well for variety.)
I was disappointed because I loved the idea of family of foods within the same brand that I could switch among.
An issue that concerns me is how high on the list the chicken fat is (#3, whereas it optimally should be 5-6), which I wonder if that is the problem my dogs had with the food. I would also withdraw my earlier opinion regading tapioca (not really an opinion but I didnt' understand its role), as further study shows it to be a good carb alternative.
This said, I would still say it is vastly superior to the standard fare that passes for dog food out there and for that reason I would give it 4 stars.

 | Conspiracy (1) 10/10/2007 | Dry NV food did not work for us. Too rich. Canned is fair, although awful consistency. Looks like yak puke. Raw medallions work as a good mix-in (occasionally) with our food of choice = Royal Canin. *** Which, hmm, the local pet stores in my town re-stock all the time, as it does not stay on the shelf long. Get suspicious when you see dust covering a bag of your premium ultra holistic dog food.

 | Msnyder (0) 10/06/2007 | I Love this food and so do my dogs. I feed about 75% raw and 25% dry kibble. I also rotate the different flavors. When I do feed them kibble I only use the instinct, which has no fillers. It's Great! They just love flavors.
If given a choice my goldens ALWAYS pick the rabbit, that's their favorite! My one golden is about 1yr old and used to have bad allergies to many things since he was a pup. I have seen 100% improvement in his skin. He has been itch-free since the 2nd week on the diet. His coat is just beautiful also.
My Chesapeake Bay retriever is also crazy about the diet. For years she would loose large amounts of her coat in patches, with the diet and some vitamin supplements I have noticed a 100% improvement with her coat as well.
They all, at one time, were very fickle about their dog food. I fed science diet and after struggling for months to get them to eat I switched to royal canin. Shortly after that they lost interest in the royal canin. My vet recommended the raw diet. So I tried it
My dogs are very active in hunting, agility, and obedience and I see a huge improvement in their muscle tone since the diet switch.
I recommend this diet for any dog, of any activity level!

I used to feed my 2.5lbs Chihuahua Wellness, Innova, and Royal Canine..I changed the food pretty often because her poop smelled really bad and sometimes diarrhea. She also had dry skin problem. After I changed to Nature's Variety (Chkn & Barley) her problems are gone! no...I'm not exaggerating...!
no more diarrhea, bad odor, and dry skin. She's picky eater but she really loves this food..if you have same problems with your dog..give it a try with N.V.

 | puppyloverkb (18) 06/20/2007 | I have decided to re-write my review in order to make it understanble for some ignorant people (Caugh***Biffsup3, jeryshore**Caugh) who do not really understand Nature's Variety at all.
Nature's Variety consists of 4 different (for lack of a better word) varieties of pet food.
The first, is their Prairie line is equivilant to say canidae or regular Innova. It does contain grains (high quality) but it is also less expensive. What separates Prairie from other similar kibble is the fact that they Bio-Coat the food with Freeze Dried Raw Meat. Since, when you cook meat some of the essential nutrients are taken out of the food, Prairie "sprinkles" them back on with the Freeze Dried Meat. This in effect, adds a little more nutrients to the food than your average kibble.
Their next type of kibble is called Instinct (Previously Raw Instinct). This is one of the highest quality kibbles on the market. What makes Instinct unique is that they use tapioca as a binder instead of Potato (like Orijen and Evo). The one downside to the food is that Chicken Fat is the third ingredient. However, the fact that Chicken meal is the first and that the food contains 42% protien indicated that they have A LOT of chicken protien in the food. Like their Prairie line, Instinct is also bio-coated with freeze dried raw meat.
Nature's Variety then has Freeze Dried medalions. This is for people who feed raw food but are going on vacation and cannot bring frozen food with them. This is definitely expensive but definitely convenient for all those raw food lovers out there. (I personally like Honest Kitchen a little better...but you must add water to that and this is already formed)
Finally we come to their raw food. They have one of the best formulations on the market (The only one that is even similar is Primal). They have 6 different meat based formulas from Chicken to Rabbit, there is a taste for every dog. Read my Raw Food review to see all the benefits of a raw diet.
Hopefully this will clear some stuff up about this food. I personally do not feed my dogs kibble (I do feed them Nature's Variety's raw food with Honest Kitchen dehydrated though) but I consider Nature's Variety to be one of the best kibbles for any dog. (The others would be Canidae, Innova, Orijen, Timberwolf, and Go! Natural)
Good Luck, Kate

 | Biffsup3 (0) 06/20/2007 | Sulfates copper, ferrous and maganese they use those types of minerals in lawn care products and drain-o. and those can build up to toxic levels in some pets and humans alike. The only type of these minerals the body uses are the amino acid complex ones.

 | jersyshore (0) 06/16/2007 | my problem is the ingredients. These are the first five: Beef Meal, Barley, Brown Rice, Oatmeal, Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid), Flaxseed Meal. The first seems great, but compared to other brands (orijen, EVO) it seems they should be more pallet friendly. More meat, broth, I don't know. Not impressed.

The stools are firm, even on the 2nd and 3rd day of the feeding. and the coat is shinny and soft. What's more, the stool is not stinky at all... I tried putting them on Orijen but the stool stinks!!! | Jakesire (11) 04/09/2007 | My updated review after 3 months of observation: Their Raw instinct is one of the 2 best "high protein" foods available. If you believe in rotating meat protein sources for your dogs, like Natures Variety recommends, and I also beleive. I would use their Raw Insitnct formula (chicken based with fish) and Innova EVO red meat (beef and lamb based), alternating 3 months each. For high energy dogs, and hard worked dogs (hunting and herding) there are no other foods that compare. If your dog/puppie is less than 1 1/2 years old, I would not use these high protein foods, as there have been several studies that indicate feeding large breed puppies a high protein and fat diet may increas the incidence of bone and joint problems including hip dysplasia. For puppies I would use Nature's variety prairie formulas, alternating among their different formulas every 2-3 months. They are lower in protein but still a very high quality food. For my normally active Lab and Pointer I use their Prairie line of foods, alternating formulas every 2 bags. Try these formulas, the food is great, and the price is reasonable. I am feeding my lab about 2/3rds of what I was previously feeding as she put on 8 lbs with this food. Feeding 1/3rd less makes this foods price work out to about the same as my previous food. There frozen foods are also great and provide nutrients that are not available in kibble foods. Check out their website: http://www.naturesvariety.com/content.lasso?page=1305

THey have fewer allergies, and no vommiting/ diarrhea. One of my dogs was on hills rx diet I/D before due to vommiting after pancreatitis, and he has had NO vommiting on nature's variety. Their coats are great, shiny and healthy. The only downfall is one of my dogs is a little prone to weight gain and with the nutritional density of the food she can not eat much, so she is hungry all the time. However, she would have to eat about 4 times as much in bulk to not be hungy, which she cannot do on ANY food without gaining weight. I would recommend this food to anyone.

 | queenbeelizzy (0) 08/16/2006 | I just started my Boston Terrier puppy on the Venison dry food, and so far so good. I had him on California Natural and he hated it and would only eat it if I mixed in wet food, which gave him horrible diareha problems. My dog has a bit of an allergy problem, so I was told this was a great product for that. He seems to be less red and itchy, but I will have to wait a little more time to see what happens. They have plenty of dry foods to switch between, and I would like to eventually try the Raw instinct which does not have any grains. My sister has two boxers and she has switched them to the Raw Instinct and they already seem to have a lot more energy, which she is a little worried about:) I also wrote them to ask some questions and they were quick to respond and very friendly. | jjsmom06 (1) 07/17/2006 | Nature's Variety appears to be committed to high quality ingredients and a good selection of products for dogs and cats. I have tried the canned dog food and my dog loved them all. They are a bit on the pricey side but are high quality ingredients and no grain! I also have tried the frozen raw food medalions and those have also gone over very well with my dog. For people who want the benefits of a raw diet for their pets but don't have the time to make a diet from scratch this is an excellent option (as is the natural balance raw frozen cubes). This company has a very good variety of products and a lot of great options for people who don't want to have grain in their dogs diet (frozen raw, no-grain canned and a dry food that is also grain free). Their grain free "raw instinct" dry food is close to Innova EVO's food with similar high quality ingredients. Would definately recomend this product to anyone who has a nearby retailer and who doesn't mind paying a bit more for their dogs food.

 | Tjlance (0) 05/13/2006 | I needed to adress Tootsie28 and the misinformation given about Nature's Variety. I don't think she / he used this product given the fact that I feed my dogs the canned variety along with Castor & Pollux dry kibble. THERE ARE NO CHUNKS IN THE CANNED FOOD. THERE IS NOTHING TO "MASH UP"
This brand is listed in The Whole Dog Journal as an approved food for dogs. Whole Dog Journal has very strict standards for allowing dog foods onto their list so subscribe and get honest information on dog nutrition.
I have truned many customers onto Nature's Variety and not one of them have had any complaints about the food. It is simply one of the best out there.

Too many ingredients and the canned was very hard for my smaller dog to chew, the chunks were too big and it was not easy to mash up. They all also vomited the food up whole. The company is extremely hard to get a hold of and when I finally got through the gentleman was extremely rude and unhelpful. He didn't answer any questions about where they get their meat, feeding instructions and overall reason why I should buy this food. Awful.

His coat is amazingly shiney and he is at a perfect weight (previously I have had trouble w/ keeping weight on him due to his high level of activity). Awesome food, I highly recommend!
