"Fluctuating Strike Zones" (Do Umpires Cheat?) 1

Judgement calls have been and will always be a part of baseball. It keeps players from knowing exactly what is and what isn't a strike because it's someone elses judgement not theirs.

Its a judgement call. No two umps will call a game exactly the same. Still, sometimes you will see bias to certain players and teams.

In his prime, Greg Maddux has a (ahem) generous strike zone. It seemed to me that some pitchers got the benefit of the doubt. Is this 'cheating'? I like to take the optimistic road- great players do get marginal calls. . .you cannot take away the human element in baseball. I think that's in part what makes it such a great game- it is free from the confines of a clock or replay. Thus, I don't think it's a big deal.
