One look at the money spent on private contractors in Iraq, or any of the other examples of privatization shows that the Govt. isn't all that inefficient. Arnold Schwarzeneger was going to cut fat from the Calif. budget. He or his consultant couldn't find much. Its easy to point to a few instances of waste, but hard to show much relative to scale. Demonizing civil servants has been a political ploy since Regan. It isn't that true.

 | Drummond (54) 12/09/2005 | Well, I believe in the possibility of semi-efficient government, but quite frankly I don't even believe in the efficiency of the private sector per se. There's plenty of waste in corporations believe it or not, and competition doesn't quite keep things as clean as popular belief would have it.
What I do believe is that there are certain industries which are inappropriate for the private sector for any number of reasons, and that the best government is that which facilites rather than micromanages. Government should be the impetus for community organization - it shouldn't BE that organization.
