 | scarletfeather (49) 10/23/2005 | I think the cops should take a sledgehammer to the DUI's car when they guy is arrested. No, seriously, this is going a little far. Impound the guy's car, but give him a chance to shape up.

 | GenghisTheHun (171) 10/12/2005 | Impounding might be part of solution. You would have a nagging problem with the destruction, however. Most cars have a finance lien on them. The holders of a lien might have a constitutional beef about their property being taken without due process of law or adequate compensation.
If the government destroys, it must pay. That is the law.

 | kattwoman (24) 10/12/2005 | i can see impounding it. between what it costs to get it out of ompound and all the fines from the court has more of a chance of making you think twice then destroy a vehicle they are just going to turn around and replace even if its just a $200 junker.

 | bluetarbaby (8) 07/29/2005 | Dumb idea. Some people have to share a car. What if a wife gets a DUI in a car her husband uses to get to work or vice versa?

 | Molfan (58) 07/28/2005 | impounding maybe. Cannot see point in destroying. as others pointed out, it may have a Lien on it. Maybe someone else in the family is counting on the car. why should they pay? otherwise they could auction or donate etc. i can understand if the driver is habitual they should not be permitted to drive.yes they could sneak and drive anyway.but I would hate to see other family members pay for them.

 | CanadaSucks (47) 07/28/2005 | A multiple DUI offender? Sure. . .perhaps. But if you impounded every person above .08 on the roads on a friday night you will have to arrest 20-30 percent of the drivers. Not possible.

 | dpostoskie (7) 07/28/2005 | DUI offenders are serious threats and there should be more severe consequences. Maybe not destroy the vehicle, take it away and auction it off to help pay for the law enforcement officers. Hell, allow the arresting officer to keep it as a bonus.

 | irishgit (145) 07/28/2005 | I understand impound. What precise good does destruction do?

 | Wavebacker (25) 07/28/2005 | Auction the car off and give the money to the victim of a DUI.

I give up. Louie, why would destroying the vehicle make any sense at all? If you're going to take a big government approach to it, why not seize it, sell it, and hire more civil servants? Or seize it and donate it to your favorite corporate campaign contributor? Why incur the additional cost of destroying the vehicle, disposing of the vehicle, and creating more waste? Has Mike Holly hijacked this list?
But other than that, like Jed, i agree.

 | texasyankee (21) 07/28/2005 | The least you could do is auction the car off!

 | Jed1000 (72) 07/28/2005 | I would agree except that the offender's family may need that vehicle for their livelihood and they aren't the ones who committed a crime.
