I write this comment three days after Hurricane Katrina. Saint Bernard parish lies north of Plaquemimes Parish and Southeast of Orleans Parish. It is a peninsula that sticks out into the Gulf of Mexico with Lake Borgne and the Mississippi Sound to the north and the Breton Sound to the south. Although most of it is swamp below sea level, the western part of the parish is next to the City of New Orleans and is heavily settled. The damage reports are still coming in. Chalmette is the parish seat of this parish and that is the site of the 1815 Battle of New Orleans.
