I write this comment three days after Hurricane Katrina. Saint Tammany is one of the Florida Parishes of Louisana. The Florida Parishes lie east of the Mississippi River and the United States did not acquire them via the Louisana Purchase, but acquired them later as that area was part of Spanish Florida. Spanish Florida extended all the way along the Gulf of Mexico from Florida to the Mississippi River. The parish seat is Covington, and the parish includes Slidell that was really hard hit by the hurricane.
