PLAYING FAVORITES AND MAKING BAD DECISIONS GETS THE TEAM NOWHERE. THE FACT THAT NO ONE SET Q.B. ACTUALLY PRACTICES WITH THE FIRST STRING CAUSES THE OVERALL OUTCOME TO BE DISASTROUS. GIVING MCCABE A SINGLE CHANCE, WHEN HE HASN'T EVEN PRACTICED WITH THE FIRST STRING FOR MORE THAN A COUPLE OF DAYS, GAVE GROH THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO PROBABLY PERMANENTLY BENCH MCCABE DUE TO THE FACT THAT HE IS NOT HIS FAVORITE OH I MEAN BECAUSE HE THREW TWO BAD PASSES. HE NOW IS MESSING UP THE TEAMS FUTURE BY STARTING A ROOKIE Q.B. WHO DOES NOT HAVE ANY COLLEGE EXPERIENCE OR HAS HAD A CHANCE TO PRACTICE WITH THE FIRST STRING, BECAUSE UNLIKE THE OTHER TWO Q.B.S WHO HAVE EARNED A CHANCE TO PLAY, HE FEELS HE IS THE BEST MAN FOR THE JOB AND IS WILLING TO SACRIFICE THE TEAMS FUTURE FOR ANY ROOKIE MISTAKES. GROH REFERRED TO THE ERRORS MADE BY MANNING AND PRETTY MUCH SAID THAT HE EXPECTS HIS NEW Q.B. TO MAKE ERRORS BECAUSE HE IS SO GREEN -- HELLO -- MCCABE MADE A FEW MISTAKES IN MAYBE THE THIRD CHANCE IN FIVE YEARS HE HAS EVER BEEN GIVEN AND HAS BE THE MOST PRODUCTIVE FOR THE TEAM. GET OVER YOURSELF AND START MAKING DECISIONS THAT ARE IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THE TEAM. MAYBE YOU'LL WIN A GAME - OH THAT'S RIGHT -- MCCABE WON A GAME FOR YOU.

He's had great recruiting classes (see Rivals.com or Scout.com for class rankings) but he's had mediocre results. He'll have to step it up a notch if he even wants to keep his job, let alone be rated "good" or "great" by rateitall.com.

Al Groh has done a great job recruiting at Virginia and has had some decent teams. However, the Cavs have yet to have a really great season under him as a coach. I think it will be hard for him to break out and have a great year with Virginia with all of the other talented teams in the expanded ACC.
Ty Webb 08/18/2005
I really think Al Groh has Virginia headed in the right direction... and that direction is down. I hope they keep him on for the long haul.
drewsurf 08/17/2005
decent recruiter because of his nfl experience. but lousy coach. couldnt win the ACC title with with USC's team. uva took two steps backwards when they hired groh. at lest welsh shared an ACC title.
dunaway05 02/22/2005
I like UVA but this guy blows.

A coach who will be great. He has come home too turn a good program into a great one. A great recruiter and developer of talent and follows the rules.
Coach Rod 12/26/2004
He has trouble winning even with great recruits.

WIn against bad teams, lose against good ones year in, year out
Wavebacker 11/29/2004
Good coach with Pro experience and excellent recruiting classes. UVA is in a tough spot though. The ACC is ulta competitive and without talent or experience in key positions a team can and will stifle itself. Groh fields good teams but they still cant crack the upper echelon of College Football. UVA is an upper tier program that will probably always win 7-8 games yet come up short against the big boys, go to the Peach or Tire Bowl and produce some good pros. So be it.
pettiebone 11/23/2004
Has Virginia's program headed to the next level. If Ahmad Brooks returns next year, Virginia could compete for the national championship.
Umar Deneb 10/30/2004
Could win the ACC this year.
Kirk Hatch 10/30/2004
Yells too much.
Carol Olack 10/26/2004
No Longer will win with Miami & FSU now in the ACC.
AG Mines 09/17/2004
Could not cut it in the NFL.
Boonta23 09/08/2004
Groh took a mediocre team in New York, the Jets, and left them an average team, to coach an average team and make them pretty good. However, Virginia, this year seems to be heading on the track towards good, and then eventually great.

A coach with a chance to get his program to the next level, and himself with it. Perhaps the next great college football coach. With the advantages of a great academic school and a major upgrade in the ACC, one of the former FSU dormats will make a big step into true bigtime. Groh has a chance to make that school Virginia. Rumblings are that this could be a great recruiting year. Now he just has to prove he's not another Mack Brown.
oopeter 07/04/2004
To be the top two coaches in the country, one must have a universally recognizable good deam. Say what you want about recruiting (umm... Mack Brown can recruit, does that make him a top pick?), UVA isn't even the best team in the state, and until it is, no one has any right to proclaim Groh as anything more than a POTENTIAL up-and-comer.
rowbeartoe 06/26/2004
**while playing more freshmen than any school in the nation, Groh has turned around the UVa program in just two short years **one of nation's absolute best recruiters
ashleyhoo05 06/24/2004
Al Groh is the best!!!! WAHOO WA! :)
NChoo 06/23/2004
Coach Groh is redefining football at U.VA. He is superior in all categories of the game. A super 5 star.
agray88 06/23/2004
Intense, tireless, a great representative for the school.

Anybody who recruits like this guy is a 5
wpeery 06/22/2004
Al Groh is one of the best recruiters in the country. He also has shown is unbelievable ability to make great halftime adjustments in the locker room. He's assembled one of his most talented teams in memory in Charlottesville for the 2004 campaign. Great things are on the horizon for the Cavaliers with Al Groh at the helm.
Douglas4 06/22/2004
What a breath of fresh air to college football. He is building a perennial powerhose at The University of Vorginia.
RichmondJim 06/22/2004
Excellent evaluator of players and coaches. Has assembled a very good group of both in the short time that he has been at UVA. Very good developer of talent--see Elton Brown, Heath Miller, Chris Canty and Billy McMullen all 1 and 2 star recruits that became or have become All Americans. Also great game day coach. Excellent half time adjustments. Has been able to consistently put his teams in positions to win games. His teams have played smart and with emotion, a tough combination to beat. Now that his early recruiting classes are starting to mature (first group are rising sophmores), expectations and excitement is rising in Charlottesville.

Virginia Football fans know he has picked up the tourch from GW and is doing a wonderful job. Any rating lower than 4 stars are being given by VA. TECH and MD fans who are for some reason both scared and obsessed with the success of Al Groh. You know someone is successful by the amount of fear shown by the competition. I guess it really doesn't matter, UVA fans LOVE Al, the comments from other fans don't mean nothing. Their dislike is a measure of his success! So, in a way all those 1 stars given by the VT and MD fans on this board have the value of 5 stars.
The Hibernian 06/22/2004
Organized, focused, driven, intelligent and competitive, combined with a hand picked top flight staff.

Solid gameday coach and leader. Great evaluater of talent.
Wahorn 06/22/2004
Relentless passion for winning a National Championship at Virginia. Excellent recruiter because of he and his staff's hard work and passion to win. Best thing to happen to UVA. Very exciting future ahead. Look out Miami! Look out FSU!

Best Coach in the mid Atlantic
wahoo03 06/21/2004
Pretty good salesman but hasn't shown a lot as a head coach yet.
Hoosball 06/21/2004
solid coach...great recruiter!
Ninobene 04/07/2004
He coached one season in the NFL (8-8 by the way, with a Parcells roster) and people make him out to be the second coming. George Welsh has forgotten more football than Groh knows. As far as recruiting, nobody has done less with more. He routinely has a stockpile of blue chippers, and can't do squat with them. Give those players to Coker, Friedgen, Beamer, etc. and they's be a BCS team yr in and yr out.
Smokefree 11/06/2003
He can recruit--thats about it.
hokeey07 07/24/2003
Man, i'm a hokie fan, but those damn cavaliers are looking kinda scary because groh can coach. All you people who think Groh sucks are just plain wrong. I'm a hokie and i don't get along very well with Cav's but facts are facts and the facts are is that Groh is kicking A$$.
terpman 1974 06/14/2003
No one can deny that Al Groh is assembling some very highly rated recruits. But that is a bit suspect in that Ahmed Brooks was counted in both classes. No one can deny the Cavs beat up Maryland last year; a game in which Friedgen says was all his fault. We'll see this year. No one can deny Groh's mediocre past record at Wake. He did what all good coaches do -- he got a great coordinator. But, that too ha changed. The jury is still out on UVa football.
Turtleboy 06/13/2003
Outside of recruiting this guy is a joke. He was a loser at Wake, took a playoff team in the NFL and made them mediocre, and then took Virginia and had them win less than 7 for the first time in over a decade. The real talent behind last year's success was the offensive coordinator, and now that he has bailed, Amway Al is going to find the ACC to be a whole lot tougher this year.
cvllelaw 05/05/2003
Two super recruiting classes, and a third one shaping up -- has the kids really believing.
bennymac 01/16/2003
Al Groh is quietly, or maybe not so quietly, putting together one of the best young teams in college football. They spanked the Terps and Mountaineers, and have a boatload of talent coming in next year. At first, I thought leaving the Jets for UVA was silly, but now it looks like he's definitely executing on his plan and that is very respectable. Look for UVA to be very competitive with the Noles and Wolfpack next year for the ACC.
