I believe more can be done for sure, but I also aware that these things are never and exact science. We have created this huge industrial dog and in many cases you just have to remember that the fleas come with it. In most cases you cannot fully address one problem with creating another. This is where the liberal mind usually comes up short or just flat tends to jump the gun. We must ween ourselves away from these environmentally destructive depencies we have at the correct pace. Slowly but surely is usually the best way in so many walks of life. I just hope we have not started too late.

 | EschewObfuscation (61) 08/01/2005 | I, obviously, worded this item to make a point. There's absurdity on both sides but conservatives are accustomed to being characterized as greedy, uncaring louts who don't care about the air their children breathe or the cleanliness of the water we all drink, while liberals are sick of being characterized as whiny, myopic paranoids who want drastic change (even if it means devastating an American industry) immediately, without regard to jobs/futures/careers lost. There are different paths to take to accomplish our objectives. To a liberal, throwing thousands of lumberjacks out of work and importing our lumber to save an endangered specie of owl (try not to think about the spotted snow owl in Dumb & Dumber) seems perfectly justifiable and reasonable. But when lumber prices skyrocket, and it costs them three times as much to build their deck, they blame profiteers. I support a conservative approach to the problem. Let's verify the facts of the situation, particularly the projected effects, before we decimate our industries. Remember when Ralph Nader wrote Unsafe at Any Speed about the Chevy Corvair? It turned out to be primarily based on faulty assumptions. Remember the DDT scare? It turned out to be mostly false. ALAR? False. How many careers were simply ended due to the panic and paranoia? The current apocalypse is global warming. Do you really blame conservatives for not jumping on the bandwagon? Again?

No as a conservative I understand that business and the environment must cooexist. The businesses have an obligation to their communities and we need to strike a balance between regulating business for the protection of our environment and the allowing businesses to also conduct business for the growth of our economy.
