A lot of smaller stores only carried Monogram and Revell and as a kid with limited spending money, you got what you could afford. These are decent models and if you're into cars and trucks as opposed to military, there is a wide selection at varying skill levels. Great for beginners.

They are fairly low-priced and are passable models witgh plenty of faults, foremost of which are badly fitting parts. You need a fair amount of model putty to fill gaps, or, alternately, you need to file and sand excess plastic to get a decent fit. I recently completed a P-61 that had atrocious fit in the canopy area (not much I could do about filling in gaps in the clear plastic), and lousey fit on two halves of one of the booms. I'm working on a Me-262 that similarly has fir problems on one of the engine nacelles. The Monogram B-25 I did some time ago was somewhat of an exception - everything fit pretty well and the completed model came out nicely.
