 | minasguy (0) 11/28/2007 | I saw an interesting video on youtube called "miniature earth", that breaks down the earth's population to hundred people and explains statistically where you basically fit in. Anyone reading this should definitely take 2 minutes and watch that video! After watching it I got that need to wanna help in some way and found a site called OneMillionUnited.com, that started almost a week ago and I liked their idea and initiative. We Can help and give aid to other countries. We do have the resources and finances, they are just not equally or properly distributed.
...and remember: Helping others...does help You!

 | Saiban (0) 10/25/2007 | Why should we give aid to other countries? The situation in our own nation should be taken care of first. Sending money to other nations is a waste of resources.

 | Vudija (92) 02/23/2007 | I think it's great that a country can be so selfless, but I think that just as much: time, energy, and money should be kept within the country to help aid our own citizens.

 | Drummond (54) 12/21/2005 | I think we should send more. It's in our own interests to promote economies which can consume our products and services.

 | James76255 (17) 09/04/2005 | I don't mind it when it's a dire situation, like to help the Tsunami victims or giving aid to help Africa. That said, I do think we could cut back on certain foreign aid, especially to the countries that have shown they don't appreciate it anyway. Cut back on some foreign aid, and it would be far easier to balance the budget, lower the deficit, and provide money for things in our own country.

 | abichara (60) 09/01/2005 | Yes, there are not only more practical concerns behind providing aid to other nations, there is also a moral perogative behind it. The problem is that aid is provided in the form of cash grants that are many times squandered by corrupt local governments. The truth is that many 3rd World nations are stuck economically not because the citizens of those countries lack the capacity to build themselves up, rather much of it comes from the lack of central planning on the part of local governments and the corruption of politicians, who enrich themselves at the expense of the people. The sign of a healthy country is a large middle class that is very entrepreneurial and culturally mobile. Building a middle class can only be accomplished by making key investments in education, light-scale industry, and basic infrastructure like roads, electricity, water and other basic necessities. Aid in the form of cash loans are a losing proposition for both the country providing the loan, who will never see the investment fully capitalized, and the country receiving the aid, where the money won't be put to work in the best way possible.

 | Daccory (15) 09/01/2005 | A recent survey here (UK) found that people are now concerned about giving aid to Africa since they have been doing this for the past 30 years and have seen no change. That's because the money hasn't always gone to where it was supposed to. It would be far better to give knowledge, help the people build for themselves, propogate food properly, encourage a different thinking pattern, etc. Sending money which just ends up in the hands of militiamen and corrupt political leaders solves nothing.

 | bluetarbaby (8) 07/31/2005 | I agree with TJgypsy to an extent. But it seems like aid is only given in situations where it might benefit us. Like Rwanda for example. We SHOULD'VE helped them. And did anybody notice the genocide in Sudan? As for Nasa: I know it's just a silly suspense novel and no real reference, but after reading 'Deception Point', I see that Nasa is not totally pointless. But back to the topic - the way things are going, we might be the ones needing aid shortly. So, we should be careful. Countries are becoming less and less dependent and intimidated by us. LIKE THE LAST DAYS OF ROME. So, we hould be careful who we deny. Still, I agree with 'Gypsy' to an extent. To an extent. By the way, is it just me, or did some topics on this list disappear? Am I imagining things?

 | TJGypsy2 (7) 07/31/2005 | I would rather see the money spent on our own country, really. While I recognize the need to help others, it only makes sense to take care of ourselves, first. Why should we spend money to teach others about aids, when we have kids in our own country who starve to death for lack of food? Perhaps all the money we're currently wasting on NASA could go there, instead.
