By far the best film about terrorism ever made. Portrays the complex and controversial story of the Algerian civil war with remakable clarity and balance; while the film is fictional, virually all the events depicted actually happened. While Gillo Pontecorvo (like most Italian movie directors) was a dedicated Communist, he is far more even-handed than Bertollucci, and does not ruin the film with propaganda. Excellent acting and soundtrack as well (by Ennio Morricone, no less).
