A prime example of drama (Robert Bolt's) at the service of exemplary social responsibility and conduct at high personal risk among individuals of conscience as public servants, not unlike the subject matter of 'Becket' (Edward Anhalt by Jean Anouilh, 1964). Further, director Fred Zinnemann adds another accomplished execution ('High Noon'; 'From Here to Eternity'; 'The Nun's Story') with extraordinary performances from Paul Scofield, in the title role, Robert Shaw, Wendy Hiller, Orson Welles and a very young John Hurt, among others.
