A good idea, maybe, but certainly not a practical one.

The machines themselves are safe. Just shield your hand while putting in your pin number. And do not use any ATM where the card slot is not flush with the face of the machine itself (indicating it is another device placed on top).

I avoid using ATMs at night, and here locally, use on at a bank that has a location that doesn't constrict me at all (i.e., I can see anyone approaching for dozens of yards). I also tend to make ATM withdrawals during bank business hours so that there are bank employees in close proximity to observe the general area. It doesn't always work out that handily, especially when you are in a strange city or a foreign country.

Impossible for me. I rarely carry a large amount of cash . I try to limit my use, but in this day in age, the ATM has just become a regular way of doing business for me. But I do try to use some caution when I use an ATM.

Wouldn't be a bad idea, but a very difficult one to implement. The best way to get around that is to make sure you do things quickly and make sure that people aren't standing too close. With several years of keyboarding experience, I tend to press the buttons so fast that my husband who stands with me can't even tell what the hell I'm doing.

I just make sure that I go to machines where no one can stand behind me. I'm always very aware of my surroundings and I certainly do not plan to give up the convenience of an ATM just because some human vermin might be in the vicinity.
