Pizzeria Delfina 5

Finally got around to trying Pizzeria Delfina today and I wasn't disappointed. The crust is perfection, and the sauce is some of the best I've had in the city.

I tried the Salsiccia pizza which is topped with fresh mozzarella (i think they exclusively use this cheese), italian sausage, red onions and red peppers. The flavor balance was excellent and the sausage had some kick to it. They also include fresh grated Parmagiano-Reggiano, whole dried basil sprigs, and hand crushed red pepper. As in all italian food, the quality and freshness of the ingredients makes the dish, and Pizzeria Delfina seems to understand this well. Price was $17 and change for about a 12 inch pie with 6 pieces. I was quite full after 3 pieces, so this would be good to share for lunch. You may need an appetizer as well for din.

The ambiance is high-end casual with lots of outdoor seating, and limited space inside. Floor to ceiling windows with bright creamy yellow walls make the small interior space seem large, and you can see them preparing the food if you sit at the bar. I happened to catch them on a rare moment when they weren't packed to capacity, so my pizza (to go) was ready in about 10 minutes. Generally, when I pass by on my way to Bi-Rite the line is out the door and down the street. Apparently the lunch rush ends around 2pm on a weekday. On weekends, good luck even fitting your name on the chalkboard wait-list :)

Pizzeria Delfina 4

OK, I finally checked out the pizza offering of Delfina, and it's pretty damn good. The pizzas are about 6 slices each, and are a reasonable size for 2 people, as long as you also get an appetizer. I got the eggplant appetizer which was decent. Back to the pizza - very thin, very light, very high quality ingredients, and the sauce is excellent. In terms of price it was about $13 for a pizza, plus another $6 or so for the appetizer. Not cheap, but not horrifically expensive. The place is tiny, and has been full pretty much every time I've walked by. The only reason we got a seat tonight was that sucked it up and sat outside as the late afternoon fog rolled off Twin Picks down 18th street at us. Overall a very nice spot, and good pizza.
