Well we win the Super Bowl?
Hell no.
Well we only get better?
It looks that way.
But, who was the idiot that said we have no defense?
Man, you need to check twice buddy, because we have some talent. Of course, nothing that compares with the likes of the Ravens and the Falcons, but no where near bad.
Like I said, our offense is going to be great, full of young players with limitless potential. Our defense as potential as well. Shaun Rogers, a 5 year veteran, has become one of the best DTs in the business. Add James Hall, and that line is scary for most offenses. Cory Redding, a 3 year veteran, is one of the better linemen in the NFC North. And Marcus Bell is another good, young lineman. Add to that Kalimba Edwards, Dan Wilkinson, Jared DeVries and rookie Shaun Cody, and you have a good line.
Edwards is smaller then most DEs, and last year, teams were able to pound the ball through him particularly. This year, Cory Redding, a much bigger DE (and more talented, in my opinion that is), should get a lot more time then Edwards, and the rushing d should pick up on efficency.
LBs include the 2 year veteran (100 tackle potential) Boss Bailey, the leader Earl Holmes (110+ tackles last year), James Davis (90+ tackles last year, 3 year veteran), and Teddy Lehman (100+ tackles last year). Add back-ups Alex Lewis, Wali Rainer, and rookie Johnathan Goddard (sixth round steal), and you have a packed LB corps.
For DBs, this is where we are weak. Dre Bly is a two time pro bowler, and the heart of the back field. He is steady most of the time, although still shaky at times. Bryant has been a disapointment, and he may become the nickel CB behind newly aquired R.W. McQuarters. Kenoy Kennedy is the best pickup, because Bracy Walker played like crap last year. Kennedy brings a presence to the back field Walker only wishes he could. The only real weak spot I can see is at the other safety position, with Terrence Holt. Holt is a young, talented safety, but he just isn't as good as Kennedy, nor as good as he has to be. It would have been nice to get our hands on Sharpers though. And, if not that, it at least would have been nice to get Law and switch him into the safety position. Damn you Jets and Vikings!!
The back field has to play better then last year if this team wants to win the NFC North, which they very well could.
Don't look at last years stats either for evidence, this is a brand new defense. They were without two good safeties, and without Boss Bailey. Fernado Bryant was a disapointment and the offense didn't stay on the field enough to give the defense good time to rest. This defense is (in my opinion) 2nd best in the NFC North (only behind the stacked Vikings) and one of the better ones in the NFC in general.
Yes, our defense is our weak point. But, as soon as these guys mature, in 1 or 2 years (espeically when Cody starts), Detriot well have the best defense they have had in the last 10+ years. If the defense doesn't perform like I say they can this year, I guarentee they well be there next year.
But, I know they well prove it this year. The offense well be better. Better plays well be called and the preseason looks favourable for Joey right now (though not a good redzone precentage for now). This well allow the defense some rest and well not force them to be on the field 4 downs and out everytime.
They well own the NFC North for half a decade, I can assure you that. If it doesn't start this year, it well next year. Both the Lions and Vikings well battle it out for a playoff spot this year, leaving both the salary cap tortered Packers and the leaderless Bears behind. With the Lions record, they could win as many as 10 games, and I am not kidding. The only, almost, guarenteed defeat is when they play Pittsburgh, but that's week 17, so maybe the starters for the Steelers won't even play (hopefully). So, really, there is no guarenteed defeat, and they play no team they can not beat.
But yes, they need more pressure on the QB, but the return of Bailey and the drafting of Cody should allow them to continue to stay a good run-stopping defense and grow into a good pash-rushing defense. Our defense isn't great, but they are no where near bad. I would be happy with a winning record (well within their grasp), let alone a division championship or a wild card victory.
They won't win the Super Bowl, but it would be nice to see them in the playoffs.
In case you didn't notice, the four things in life I know about are World War 2, the NHL, movies and my Lions.
