 | irishgit (150) 04/17/2008 | If these guys are supposed to be the forefront of the big leftist conspiracy, the right wingers have nothing to worry about.
Very hit or miss, either excellent programming or duller than listening to Al Gore read the legal disclaimer on your cell phone contract.

 | GenghisTheHun (177) 04/17/2008 | This is a has-been outfit that has long outlived its usefulness. It is time to sail to Valhalla, gang. The terrible danger is that you might fall asleep while driving if you listen to this gaggle of losers. Drop the public subsidy and let them sell ads or go to full time begging. Join the club, PBS.

 | FranksWildYears (57) 10/22/2007 | They draw roughly $100 million in grant funding per year which seems like an outrageous amount of money, especially so when you consider that is the amount that Howard Stern gets paid annually under his satellite radio contract.

 | Djahuti (57) 06/25/2006 | Freedom of speech and the availability of information from independant sources is essential to keeping America Free and Diverse.NPR is an asset we can't afford to lose. When people in high places try to stifle radio or TV programs,it should sound an alarm to the masses.

 | oscargamblesfro (81) 12/20/2005 | No, I'm sure there's whackjobs on it, but I enjoy the idea of it and dislike federal intervention in what is supposed to be a free public service. I'm sure there's boring stuff on it, but also interesting stuff as well.

 | kamylienne (80) 10/02/2005 | LOL . . . "dangerous to America"? These guys? Yeah, I've heard people complain about NPR, how they're so "one-sided" and it's some big "conspiracy" and they should "cut all government funding" from them. They provide news for the handful of people that listen to them, and occasionally classical music, from what I understand (and somehow they manage to find the people with the most monotone voices to be on there, too . . . is that a prerequisite for the job or what? I mean, I wouldn't mind trying to listen, but it's a bit tedious).
And their funding? Is it soaking up too much in government money? According to their website, NPR says:
"The only direct government funding NPR receives is through competitive grants from government agencies for specific projects. Such grants are awarded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the National Science Foundation, and the National Endowments for the Arts and the Humanities, and typically represent only 2% of total revenues."
That puts it to about two or three million dollars per year. Sounds like a lot, but it's not all that much. The government wastes billions of dollars, some outlined here (http://www.heritage.org/Research/Budget/wm839-list.cfm). According to www.heritage.org,
"The Defense Department wasted $100 million on unused flight tickets, and never bothered to collect refunds even though the tickets were reimbursable."
"The Advanced Technology Program spends $150 million annually subsidizing private businesses, and 40% of this goes to Fortune 500 companies."
"Better tracking of student loan recipients would save $1 billion annually."
. . . and we think $2 million on NPR is some huge waste of government funds? Wow. I think we've got better things to worry about.
