Probaly the best Britcom of all time - which means the best of all time. American shows are generally naff, and their best are copies or variations on the great British ones. All in the Family was the best translation of all. It worked and translated mcuh better than most, BUT though I loved Archie, the British original wins hands down,as did Steptoe and Son (aka Sanford in the US - pretty lame Robin's Nest (aka Three's company), recently The Office (same name) etc. why do the Us shows have to always end with everyone hugging and being friends/forgiving etc. The British are FAR more adventurous with their comedy, and know how to weave a story withinh other stories - intelligent writing versus sappy!

This was the origin of All in The Family, Alf Garnet made Archie Bunker look like a prince. Very edgey almost dark comedy and very political for its time.

Alf Garnett said some dodgy things on the show but the reason it worked is because his son in law and daughter disagreed with his philosophy and this was the balance. The show was daring for it's time. Warren Mitchell made Alf almost real monster and there isn't anything on British TV like it at the moment. Maybe there should be. What would he think of Darling Tony ?
