I'm From the Uk and so have taken a step back on this issue. I was not born in the US and don't know all the constitutional rights, but from what I can see the ACLU is a group of people politically minded in pushing Christianity out. You never see them filing law suites against Islam, Budism, New age or come to think of it any other belief. They have an agenda and that is clear!!!! But Christians should be stepping up and debating against them. The problem is there seems to be many wishy washy Christains and not enough True Chritians with strong vocal cords. Christians, Christ died for us that we might LIVE and HE died for OUR SINS that WE did against HIM. STEP UP!!!!

For some reason, they target Christianity and ignore Islam and Judaism.

The ACLU is a convenient target these days. I doubt that it is hardly the anti-Christian monster that it has been made out to be. And since people seem to want to debate church/state separation, let me say that a bunch of random quotes by the Founding Fathers (many of which are probably taken out of context) do not constitute an argument against the separation of church and state. It's the meaning of the First Amendment. It's a political force that allows for religious freedom and keeps the United States from becoming a theocracy. Nowhere in the Constitution, the Bill of Rights or any other document that is important to our country states that we're a Christian nation. And in current times, when our country is a melting-pot, it is no longer even accurate to say that we're a "Christian nation", as there are many religions here. And Christians are not the only ones deserving of religious freedom. The ACLU does often go too far in trying to uphold this principle in our government. Keeping Christianity from becoming our national religion (and trampling all over other religions in our country) is one thing. Nit-picking about a cross on some state's seal is another. But in my opinion, the ACLU is a scapegoat these days.

I'd tend to agree (or wouldn't necessarily disagree) with paulw62's points, but I'd correct his utilization of the "separation of church and state" phraseology. I would supplant "Congress shall make no law" in its place, that's as far as the US Constitution goes. Everything else, including the whole "separation" drivel, is hyperbole and exaggeration.

Our founding fathers were not Bible-believing Christians; they were deists. A necessary consequence of these beliefs was a rejection of many doctrines central to the Christian religion.Fundamentalist Christians are currently working overtime to convince the American public that the founding fathers intended to establish this country on "biblical principles," but history simply does not support their view.Clearly, the founders of our nation intended government to maintain a neutral posture in matters of religion.Separation of church and state is what the founding fathers wanted for the nation, and we must never allow anyone to distort history to make it appear otherwise.

It's so easy to forget America's beginnings. Patrick Henry in 1776 wrote: "It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great Nation was founded not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For that reason alone, people of other faiths have been afforded freedom of worship here."

Doesn't happen often but I am with Canada on his post. He's right. A majority of the Christians (in this site and also all around me) do not tolerate other religions, when in fact this country was founded on the belief that people could believe what they want.

I guess some people think this is funny- but I don't. The ACLU cares more about civil liberties than most Americans do- if that pisses off a few snake-handling, foot-washing Christians who never spent a day in graduate school- then too bad and get out of America. You remember America, right? Where all religions are tolerated? Sometimes people just need a reminder no matter how harsh that sting on their face feels. . .

True...but also truer-given their causes and clients across the board, they are guilty by reason of insanity;they really are.

The ACLU defends the rights of pedophiles to associate on public grounds but will go to war over a 6 by 12 posting of the Ten Commandments- and something isn't deeply wrong with that?

I don't recall them complaining about any other religious beliefs.
