From its flocked paper coffee cups to its white paper bags, Cafe Madeleine delivers quality. The coffee is strong (French, Vienna, or French decaf), the muffins are excellent, and the variety of elegant and beautiful cakes and pastries in a glass case are to the usual Danish as haute couture is to grandmothers flannel nightgown. The shop offers a variety of hot and cold sandwiches made to order, on the high end of the normal price range in the financial district, with a simple, premade express sandwich of the day for under four dollars. Delicious quiches and small pot pies are customer favorites and come with a side of dressed greens, and of course theyll heat the quiche for you if youre doing takeaway. Seating is available at a counter inside the window or at a few small tables near the door and, in good weather, outside. Combined with fast, efficient service, the good food, good coffee, and chocolate treats make Cafe Madeleine a welcome presence on California Street.
