He jumped, the 'chute didn't open, and he croaked. The area is heavily forested. Some kid found a batch of money, a few years after the incident, in the area where he should have landed.

Much of the excitement of the mystery is probably gone now that it's so likely the man died. The parachute he carried was one that couldnt have worked. We may never know who did it, but he is probably lying at the bottom of the Columbia River.
