Most (but not all) of the royal structures that King Phillip IV commissioned to occupy this area were destroyed in the Napoleonic Wars. Eventually, the space that was opened by this destruction was made available to the public, and now accomodates many appealing attractions. They include the world's only statue of Lucifer, a crystal (glass) palace, a rose garden, and an Egyptian fountain--all centered around a lake.
