This is a fairly strong GOP district but does have some Democratic strength. Incumbent GOP Trent Franks has received about 60% of the vote in his two elections, and George W. Bush won 61% in 2004. Franks was born in 1957 and is a Baptist.
The district has Northwest Maricopa County with Sun City, Mohave County, the Grand Canyon with two Indian Reservations and the Hopi Reservation in Northeast Arizona. It has the strangest shape of almost any district in the nation, but was so created to give the Hopis a voice against the Navajos.
