This district is supposedly the most left wing district in California.  It is 35% white and the rest mixed with no group having a majority. Kerry received 86% of the vote here in 2004.

Incumbent Democrat Barbara Lee has been easily elected five times.

She was born in 1946 and has no religious affiliation.

Quite a courageous stand not to authorize giving Bush war powers. Now many of us agree it was the correct stand.

If memory serves me correctly, Congresswoman Lee (whose district encompasses Berkeley, California) was the only House member to come out againt our invasion of Afghanistan. She took the position that we should stop and reflect first, and that she did not want to be part of a unanimous call to war.
