UPDATE AFTER 2006 ELECTIONS: The GOP held onto this strongly Republican district by electing Kevin McCarthy (R) to succeed the retiring William M. Thomas. McCarthy was born in 1965 and is Methodist.

ORIGINAL COMMENT.This once bedrock Democratic district is now firmly in the GOP ranks. George W. Bush won 68% of the vote here.

William M. Thomas is so safe that the Democrats did not run anyone against him in 2004. He has been elected starting in 1978.

Thomas was born in 1941 and is Baptist.
