 | AleashaC (0) 09/17/2008 | It is a common misconception that most tests on animals are carried out with the aim of finding a cure for cancer, AIDS, or other devastating human diseases.

 | marumarum (0) 09/28/2007 | They have been doing cosmetics for centuries and without any animal testings. Nowadays they put mostly dangerous chemicals in cosmetic products and need to know how much these poisonous compounds they can put in lipstick or mascara without killing humans immediately. They make 100 or 1000 times stronger poisons and wait how many hours it will take until animals are dead. So they can compute how long it will take until people start dying or getting sick and if it's over 2 years then nobody can sue them. It's just legal thing- only cosmetic companies that use no natural compounds do animal tests. Other animal experiments are totally useless- you can test diapers by wetting it with water and you don't have be a chemistry genius to test that HCl will burn your skin.
It's not about stepping on ants or spiders, but avoiding damage that can be avoided to animals. Is killing humans OK, if some of us are killing ants by accident or people are dying in war anyway?

 | lightfinger2000 (2) 04/15/2007 | everyone who rated a 1,I respect your view but it is narrowminded.I am not informed yet I know many animals are mistreated, testing in itself is not mistreatment.I would like to see if other ways are possible/viable but what is things such as toilet paper, feminine hygeine products, someone mentioned shampoos etc...not tested or worse tested on humans.I hate to say it but traditionally compared to humans animals are expendable and if you don't think so I challenge you not to kill a spider, step on an ant, swat a fly,bug spray a cockroach,or trap a mouse. And respectively chihuahua, animals were put on this planet and we were given dominion over them. That means we also have been given the commandment to act responsably in regards to them as well as use them for the betterment of our lives .

 | GenghisTheHun (177) 04/15/2007 | I am shocked and amused. Do none of the one star posters not use deoderant, or lipstick, or aftershave, or mascara, or rouge, or hair dye, or lip gloss or other products? Does anyone out there use bath soap? Come on, give me a break. You all do, folks, and these products must be tested before human use!

 | puppyloverkb (18) 03/08/2007 | In response to Genghisthehun, yes I use shampoo, but I always check the label to make sure the product was not tested on animals. I would much rather have the companies test their products on humans...after all we are the ones using them! And in response to Lightfinger2000, comparing a dog to a cockoach is a little outragous! Yes, i step on cockroaches and i sure as hell will kill a black widow if I see one but how anyone can condone locking a dog in a cage and only taking it out to plaster makeup all over it is beyond me! Yes, we were given "dominion" over dogs, but with that comes respecting that dominance as well. Parents are given dominence over their kids but you don't see anyone condoning child abuse! Dogs have feelings, every day when i come home from work i see the light spark up in my dogs eyes as they jump all over me trying to greet me. It is people with minds like yours that allow this to torture to continue to happen to these animals. It must stop! I leave you with this quote, "The dog has seldom been successful in pulling man up to its level of sagacity, but man has frequently dragged the dog down to his." ~James Thurber

 | LadyJesusFan777 (39) 06/23/2006 | This is nothing but cruel and inhumane treatment. These creatures are living and they have FEELINGS, just like people! Come on! We're in the 21st century. They should be able to test in much different ways by now.

 | Kenjinx (0) 04/20/2006 | I love animals and I'm against cruel animal treatment. But lets keep in mind without proper means of testing, many of the products we use may have deadly consequences like facial scarring. I'm sorry but I dont want either choices of not wearing makeup or having an allergic reaction from an untested product. Also keep in mind, the shampoo and soap are used for animal testing too. Yet I dont hear any protests on this.

 | texasyankee (22) 08/29/2005 | There really is no reason anymore to use animal testing inthe cosmetic's industry any longer. The stuff that has been proven is basically out there already and to continue the testing is just irrelevant.
Not to mention, the point of abusing these animals over vanity is a sin.

 | Djahuti (57) 08/28/2005 | They should stop testing cosmetics on innocent animals and instead use criminals. That's one way they could repay their debt to society, besides, some of them would be thrilled!

 | kamylienne (80) 08/27/2005 | Animal Testing is* controversial in general, but I'm dead-set against using animals for testing something so useless as cosmetics. We're torturing animals for the sole purpose of appeasing our vanity? I can't think of a good reason why animal testing for cosmetics would be useful. (*edited for spelling)

 | earthbound (40) 08/26/2005 | It was Rene Descartes who first expounded the theory that an animal was an automaton, lacking in consciousness, sensation and self awareness. The cries of an animal in pain, according to Descartes, was akin to the noise of machinery. This thinking was the philosophical foundation for animal experimentation.
Now, few people believe that the Cartesian view of animals holds much water. However, the wheels that were set in motion are still turning. Proponents of animal experimentation nowadays have to go further in their defense of animal experimentation, and point to the great medical advancements that they believe can and have been made through the use of animals, and then, on an ethical front, balance this with the unfortunate suffering of the animals involved, arguing that it is all for the greater good.
However, animal testing for cosmetics? It is a stretch to put this side by side with cancer research as a valid reason to take an animal's life in an agonizing way. Even if you contend that the human need for luxury items trumps the most basic rights one might afford to a vertebrate, there still remains the fact that there is a huge selection of cosmetic products available that are brought to market without animal experimentation.
Update to genghis: True, everyone uses these products, but they do not need to be tested on animals prior to use. As I mentioned before, there is a wide range of cosmetics available that are not tested on animals. People who are uncomfortable about animal testing may well start buying goods that are not tested on animals. Losing business is a great incentive for companies to change their testing policies, in fact it trumps any moral or ethical argument you can make to a company.

 | TJGypsy2 (7) 08/26/2005 | Horrible practive, done in the name of vanity only. For medical purposes I can understand, if not support, the use of animals. For cosmetics....never. No person anywhere has such a need to look better than they do that it's worth the life of an innocent and helpless animal, and I do not care whether they have feelings or souls or anything else. Killing something to make you look better, whether you did it yourself or by proxy (that is, by buying from companies that do) makes you at best an inconsiderate, and at worst a soulless person. I'm sure there's a special place in hell for this one.

 | Banshee (0) 08/24/2005 | One of those things you can't turn the other cheek against. Without sounding sociopathic, could you imagine if these poor animals got their revenge and committed the kinds of experimentation on us, as we have on them? I'm up for a street fight with the bitches who nonchalantly wear fur, and animal-tested cosmetics. A fist fight!

 | Boxers'n'Danes (1) 08/24/2005 | I wholeheartedly agree with each and every comment on this one. It blows my mind to think that someone actually has this job, and goes to it daily. This practice should have long ago become obsolete. We know most substances and elements inside and out, and we know how and with what they react, and we can pretty precisely predict whether or not it is safe for human skin/eyes/etc. So why still test it? And if you have a doubt about the safety of a product, don't test it, throw it out!!!

 | CastleBee (85) 08/23/2005 | Pain and suffering in the name of vanity. Vile. When you realize that the animals themselves are incapable of sinking this low it actually makes you question validity of the the term superior species.

 | Graymalkin (52) 08/23/2005 | I always knew there was something about Descartes that I did not like, anyone who thinks he is merely on the premise that he has a snippet of a thought in his overblown head.
The awful photo of the rabbits held down together depicting this topic is all so true and still happens frequently. I remember even years ago reading stories of how these albino bunnies were given drops in their eyes of foreign substances over a period of several days as their eyes became swollen and red with irritation. Many became blind while writhing in pain. This is despicable and an unnecessary practice. Although I rarely wear makeup when I do I use a product from a known company that does not resort to testing on animals. Other than in the UK, there are few laws out there that have stopped this deplorable practice.
